In Asgard, Loki, Thor's adopted brother, conspires with the alien race the Hitari. He gains possession of the Tesseract, a cosmic artifact of incredible power, and escapes to Earth. Loki's goal is to subjugate humanity, and in exchange, the Hitari will grant him control of the planet. He steals the Tesseract from a secret S.H.I.E.L.D. facility and takes control of several key agents, including top marksman Clint Barton (Hawkeye) and scientist Erik Selvig. S.H.I.E.L.D. Director Nick Fury responds to the threat and initiates the "Avenger Protocol." Agent Phil Coulson recruits Tony Stark (Iron Man), and Natasha Romanoff (Black Widow) travels to Calcutta to find Bruce Banner (Hulk), whose knowledge of gamma radiation may help track down the Tesseract. Meanwhile, Steve Rogers (Captain America) is pulled from the present-day reality for a mission. Loki stages a show attack in Stuttgart, stealing iridium to stabilize the Tesseract portal, but is stopped by Captain America and Iron Man, after which Thor arrives, trying to reason with his brother. They are all taken to a S.H.I.E.L.D. flying aircraft carrier, where Bruce Banner joins the team. Tensions and mistrust immediately arise between the heroes, especially when it is revealed that S.H.I.E.L.D. planned to use the Tesseract to create a weapon. Loki, in a holding cell, manipulates them, pitting them against each other. The Hitari attack the carrier, disabling it. In the chaos, Barton wounds Fury and nearly destroys the ship, Banner transforms into the Hulk and goes berserk, and Thor is trapped. Loki escapes, killing Agent Coulson along the way, marking a turning point for the heroes. United in Coulson's memory, the Avengers fly to New York, where Loki, with Selvig's help, has already activated the Tesseract above Stark Tower, opening a portal to space. The Hitari army launches a full-scale invasion. A massive battle for the city begins: Iron Man fights in the air, Captain America coordinates the defense on the ground with Black Widow.
