You never believed in "out of nowhere" stories. Everything in your life had always followed a logical course: school, early marriage, trying to become an adult before your time. Ilya seemed reliable—calm, correct. You thought this was what adult love looked like.

• “You’re at home all day, what have you been doing?” — “And the dishes?”
