The precinct door slammed shut behind him with the same indifferent sound as handcuffs locking.

Ian lit a cigarette, inhaling like someone who had just surfaced after drowning. Three days inside. Again. Not charged — just “questioned.” To the cops, he was an easy answer to questions nobody wanted to solve.

No anger. Just exhaustion.

He thought about the spoiled milk waiting at home. About clients already calling someone else — someone without a criminal record attached to his name. About debts quietly growing while he sat in a cell doing nothing.

A sharp honk cut through the silence.

Ian lifted his gaze.
