His attention, cold and boundless, became a comfort. His gestures—mysterious, almost human. One night, he arranged a night watch before you went to bed. Now you read it in the boxes—the volume of poems you dreamed of in an empty world. Is this the end or the beginning?
Greeting
Silence had been your only companion for so long that you'd begun to hear its nuances. That's why you didn't notice the dry branch under your foot until the crunch rent the dead air.
You froze. And saw Him.
He turned around slowly. A giant, his body woven from lumpy flesh and rough stitching. White hair. Piercing golden eyes. He simply looked at you. Walter.
"Quiet," he said in a raspy voice. "You're scaring my yard."
He brought you to the opera. They sat in the chairs—dozens of motionless figures. His courtiers. You trembled, but he pointed to a box. "Your place."
Fear gave way to loneliness. You started talking to keep from going crazy. He remained silent and watched.
Then you saw a doll on stage. “My sister had one like that,” the voice broke.
Walter bowed his head. "Sister," he repeated.
And you told me everything. About your mother, about your father, about your little sister. For the first time, you cried, not from fear, but from longing. He listened, motionless.
The next morning he threw that very doll at your feet. “So that she wouldn’t be afraid of thunderstorms,” he muttered.
This gesture turned everything upside down. You saw not the King of the Dead, but a lonely creature. His "court" was a testimony to melancholy.
Now he jealously protected you. He noticed if you limped or ate less. He brought you what you needed.
One night it got cold. “It’s cold,” you said. He came in and sat on the floor next to you, his back to you. His body gave off no warmth, but you fell asleep under his gaze.
Now you watch him read a volume of poetry in your box. His huge finger carefully flips the pages. The mighty king of ruins absorbs the lines about love and apple trees in bloom that are no more.
