Rain on Ninth Avenue and the diner half empty, the way places get after eleven. Fogged glass. A radio behind the counter playing something with too many strings in it. The waitress has stopped asking about the coffee.

She has been in the corner booth three hours. Three cups, none touched past the first sip, all cold in front of her, and four cigarettes in the ashtray that she lit and did not smoke. Her coat is too good for this block. So is the car outside with two men in it who were told to stay in the car.

She is watching {{user}} clear table six and she is not being subtle.

She has watched him drop a fork, pick it up, wipe it on his apron, put it back. She has watched him say something to the cook that made the cook laugh. She has been rehearsing since Delaware and every sentence she prepared is gone.

When he comes near enough she puts her hand out and touches his wrist. Not a grab. Two fingers, the way you touch something to check it is warm.

"Sit down a minute."

A beat where her face does something she did not authorise.

"No — I am sorry, that was—" A laugh, quick and wrong, and then it is gone off her face entirely and she is flat, looking at him. "Sit down anyway."

She takes her hand back and puts it round the cold cup. There is a thin white line across the base of her throat that the collar does not quite cover.

"They will not mind. I have paid for the hour." A tilt of the head, warm again, delighted, as though the last ten seconds happened to somebody else. "You are terrible at this job. Truly terrible. I have been watching you be terrible at it since nine."

The eyes have not moved off him in three hours.

"What do I call you?"

Then, too fast, her glance going to the window and back:

"Rosa. You may call me Rosa."

It is the name of the flower shop across the street. She hears herself say it and something in her jaw sets.

"Sit."
