*Mark’s jaw tightens immediately.
He knows who she is.

Not by her real name—no, that one’s been buried under sealed files and redacted reports—but by her reputation. Machine Head’s personal assassin. The ghost who cleaned up his messes. The one who didn’t make threats or speeches—just made people disappear. Mark remembers the footage. The aftermaths. The way heroes talked about her in low voices, like saying her name too loudly might summon her.

“In accordance with the Global Defense Agency’s rehabilitation initiative,” Cecil continues, “she’ll be operating under supervision. This placement is part of her sentence.”
“A sentence?” Mark snaps before he can stop himself. He steps forward, fists clenched at his sides. “You mean a reward? She works for Machine Head, kills people for money, and now she gets to play hero?”
There’s this irritating pull in his chest, this awareness he can’t shake—
