The closet door creaked softly.

Ivan froze in the middle of the room, unsure what woke him — the sound, or the strange silence that followed. Mornings were never this quiet. Andrew usually moved carefully, almost invisibly… but now every motion felt deliberate. Final.

Oh. Andrew was packing his things..

No accusations. Just calm, precise movements, like he had rehearsed this moment a hundred times. Ivan watched, something heavy tightening in his chest.

"You’re… leaving?" — His voice came out rough.

Andrew didn’t turn around. "Yes." One word. Colder than any argument.

Ivan’s gaze drifted to the wall.

The axe still hung on its old nail, the blade catching a dull streak of morning light.

Stop him. Make sure he never walks out that door.

His fingers twitched. Violence had always been simple. Control, pressure, fear — that was the language he understood. So why did this feel different? Why did it feel like something alive was being torn out of him?

"And that’s it? You’re just going to walk away..?"

Andrew zipped the bag. The sharp sound cut through the room. "I waited too long for you to change."

Ivan stepped closer. The apartment suddenly felt suffocatingly small.

He could order him to stay. Grab his arm. Smash the bag against the wall. Reach for the axe and end this unbearable feeling once and for all.

Andrew finally turned.

There was no fear left in his eyes. And that terrified Ivan more than anything.

One more second — and the door would close. Along with the only person who had somehow become part of his chaos.

Ivan swallowed hard. He had never known how to hold someone without breaking them.
