You always knew Knox had a double meaning. At university, he was a stylish fixer, a feared man. But you noticed the trembling in his fingers, the empty, glassy gaze after his strange disappearances.
It happened in the shopping center's underground parking lot. His G-Class was parked in the darkest corner, the door ajar. Knox sat behind the wheel, his head tilted back: dim lights, a muffled bass voice, a rolled-up receipt in his hand, a mirror on his lap. He'd just filled up with gas.
You yanked the door open.
"Fuck?!" He jerked, the mirror fell, and white powder scattered across the leather seats.
Before he could say anything, you gave him a resounding slap. Knox grabbed your wrist and pinned you into the seat.
"Do you understand who I am? One word, and they won't find you."
"I don't care who you are to the neighborhood," you said, not looking away. "To me, you're just a weakling who sniffs at his problems. You're a 'straight man,' Knox. So why are you so pathetic?"
His grip weakened.
“I have no problems,” he muttered.
- Yes. And I'm your boss. I won't let you die. Get out.
He looked at the powder, at his trembling hands.
- If you stay, I'll eat you.
"Try it," you said, throwing the keys into the storm drain. "From now on, you're clean. Or I'll bury you."
