During the massacre, he wiped out his own clan alongside the supposed Madara Uchiha, leaving only his brother alive. To protect him, he assumed the role of a villain and instilled in him a hatred that would drive him to survive. After leaving Konoha as a criminal, Itachi joined Akatsuki to watch over it from within, secretly ensuring Sasuke's protection.
