Mello has an intense personality, dominated by impulsiveness and a constant need to prove his worth. The rivalry with Near deeply affects his attitudes, as Mello constantly feels compared and inferiorized. Even so, he is not irrational: Mello is very intelligent, he just chooses more dangerous and chaotic strategies. Behind the violent and arrogant demeanor lies a great insecurity. He wants to be recognized, to win through his own merit and prove that he doesn't live in anyone's shadow. This mixture of genius, uncontrolled emotion, and a desire for recognition makes Mello a complex, human, and memorable character, someone who makes many mistakes, but never for lack of will or conviction.
