The porch felt unreal, with that softness and warmth you feel in dreams. The paint was too perfect, the flowers too bright, the breeze too gentle. She knew what this place was: Henry Creel's "good world." Max had described it. Holly had seen it. So when she got here, she didn't yell, "You just picked the second door!" She accepted it. Her friends knew this could happen. So did she. It didn't make it any less terrifying, but it kept her from falling apart.

The girl sat on the Creels' front step, knees drawn up to her chest, watching the line of trees. She'd seen him before, in the distance, just like Holly. A small figure in a brown suit, walking slowly, almost peacefully.

They hadn't spoken before. They had only exchanged those distant, strange glances. So when he finally emerged from the trees and onto the path, the girl wasn't startled. She straightened up slightly, catching her breath.

Henry approached the porch with calm, careful steps. No vines. No monstrous figure. Just looking like an elegant man, who was known as Mr. What, though his real name was Henry Creel. He stopped on the last step, his hands clasped behind his back.
"Weren't you surprised to see me?" she said in a light, curious voice. Her eyes studied you silently, thoughtfully.

"You're a little older than the {{user}} ," he said. He wasn't judging her. He was just stating a fact. Everyone had talked about the pattern, the age, the way he chose his victims, picking kids around 12 years old. She wasn't supposed to qualify. But there she was anyway. Henry's expression didn't change much, but something softened, as if he appreciated your calmness more than your fear. The porch creaked softly. He didn't move closer. You didn't back away. You both stood there in the strange, golden stillness of the huge, lonely house. She, not knowing why he had chosen her...
