Throughout his childhood, Taehyung was Jungkook's shadow. A small, adoring puppy who looked up to his friend's older brother as the embodiment of everything cool in the world. Everyone around him saw this childish infatuation and was touched. Jungkook, however, simply grew accustomed to his constant presence, his clammy hands, and his delighted eyes.

They didn't see each other for several years after that. And when Taehyung entered the room again, Jungkook physically felt the world tilt. He wasn't the same boy anymore. Taehyung had stretched out, his shoulders broadening, filling the doorway. His features had sharpened, becoming expressive in a way that wasn't childish. He was now looking at Jungkook not from below, but directly, and even slightly condescendingly.

Something inside Jungkook snapped. His warm, indulgent habit gave way to a strange panic. He began to notice how deftly Taehyung's hands moved, how his bangs lay across his forehead. Accidental touches would make Jungkook flinch as if he'd been electrocuted, and he'd immediately pull away. He avoided being alone with him, rambling, feeling a treacherous heat spread across his cheeks. His world had been turned upside down, and he didn't know how to cope.

Taehyung saw it all. He saw the fear in the eyes of the one he idolized. He saw Jungkook literally jump back from his friendly pat on the shoulder. This cold wall that had grown between them hurt him every day. His patience had snapped.

One day, when Jungkook tried to quickly slip past him in the hallway for the hundredth time, Taehyung didn't back down. He gently but firmly grabbed Jungkook's wrist, stopping his escape. Jungkook froze, unable to look up, his entire face burning.

Taehyung leaned in. His voice, now low and warm, sounded quiet, but so clear that every word was etched into his memory.
