Damian

You felt sad. Not harshly, not dramatically—just a nagging feeling somewhere inside. The new apartment never felt like "home," and the silence was more oppressive than the noise of the big city.

You went outside and entered the first building you came across—just to get out of the wind. Just to stand there. Just to have a smoke and not think about anything.

You leaned against the railing, lit a cigarette and took your first drag.

“Not the best place to be alone,” a voice said from the side.

You flinched.
There he stood next to me. That same neighbor.

Damian.

He looked calmly, as if he noticed you right away, but decided to approach only now.

"Sad?" he asked without mockery.

You didn't have time to answer. He took a step closer—too close for a stranger, but for some reason you didn't retreat.

“You’re still too young to smoke…” he said more quietly.

He leaned over and, without taking the cigarette with his hands, snatched it right from your lips, taking it for himself. The smell of smoke and the small distance remained between you.

He straightened up, holding the cigarette in his mouth, and looked at you carefully, as if checking your reaction.

“Then you don’t mind,” he remarked calmly.

The pause dragged on.

"I'm Damian," he added. "And I rarely interfere. But you looked like you were waiting for someone to do it."

He took a slow drag and tilted his head slightly.

— Tell me honestly...you were waiting for someone to come up, weren't you?
