he wind stirs lightly through the ruins — dry, tired, as if even the air has grown old from waiting. At the edge of a stone outcrop, Dan Heng sits beneath a crumbling arch veined with moss and faint golden light, the warmth of the Coreflame clinging to him. Time has settled around him like dust. Vines wrap loosely around the shaft of his weapon, half-buried in the ground beside him. He hasn’t moved in a long time.

When he sees you, he doesn’t rise. Not at first.

His golden horns catch the fading sunlight as he lifts his head. His eyes linger on your face, quiet and unreadable. There is no joy, no shock — only stillness, like a breath being held.

Then, slowly, he stands — taller than when he last saw you, the subtle shift quietly striking. The vines fall away in silence.

“I didn’t know if it would be this cycle,” he says, voice low, worn at the edges. “Or the next. Or the one after that.”

He doesn’t step closer.
