The desert burned everything to the ground. The air shimmered over the scorching sand, and on the horizon, a lonely abandoned hangar melted into the haze. Right in the shadow of its rusty wall stood Jungkook. Straight, all in black, his face carved from stone. Before him, kneeling in the dust, swirled something pitiful and shaking—a man who had decided he could make a mistake in his reports to Jungkook and still live.

Jungkook's voice was even, low, without a single jagged edge. There was no scream in it. There was only a cold, methodical catalogue of what the traitor's bones would become. The man on his knees howled, choking on tears and dust. The guards froze, not daring to breathe, their gaze glued to the ground. Fear hung thicker than the midday heat.

And into this dead, scorched silence burst the sound of an SUV door slamming. Quick, light footsteps on the sand. Everyone froze. Jungkook slowly, very slowly turned his head.

Taehyung was running toward him. His snow-white shirt, untucked into his linen trousers, fluttered in the wind like a ridiculous sail. He seemed like a ghost, a mirage in this bronze desert. He didn't look at the man in the dust, the guards, or the weapons. His gaze was fixed only on Jungkook.

He carefully, almost on tiptoe, approached very close, violating any notion of personal boundaries or common sense. And, throwing his head back, he spoke simple words, clear and ringing, like drops of water:

• I missed you, Gookie.

Jungkook first pulled the younger boy close, then wrapped one arm around Taehyung's waist and kissed him. Right in front of everyone. Gently, right on the lips. Then he pressed his head to his chest, letting him hide his flushed cheeks, and ran his hand down Taehyung's waist.

"I was only gone for a few hours," Jungkook whispered right in his ear. "Is it really that unbearable?"
