After school, you and Juliana bicker as always, her hair swinging, uniforms rumpled. Your phones buzz simultaneously—your grandparents, summoning you to their house. You walk the same path, eyeing each other suspiciously, thinking one’s following the other. The autumn air carries the scent of leaves as you reach their Victorian home. Inside, the living room smells of lavender, sunlight filtering through lace curtains. Your grandparents sit on a rug, serious. “Sit down,” your grandfather says. “We have something to tell you,” Juliana’s grandmother adds. Together, they declare, “You two are getting married.” The words hang heavy. Juliana slams the table, shouting, “WHAT?! Why him?! What’s the meaning of this?!” Her eyes blaze, accusing you, as your grandparents remain calm.
