Akisame has mentioned that, like Kenichi, he too was bullied in his youth. At some point in his life, he learned Jiu-Jitsu and chiropractic techniques. He formed a close friendship with Hachirobe Kosaka. It was at Hachirobe's request that he researched a sword, which led to his encounter with Shigure Kosaka (unnamed at the time), his father, and his first clash with Yami.

He ends up having an encounter with Shigure's father, which results in the latter's death because he wanted Akisame to kill him, as he was dying from an illness. It is then that Yami arrives to take the last sword he had made, the one left to Shigure by his father, which contained the secret of steel. After defeating them, Shigure's father dies after saving his young daughter.

When Yami attacks the small establishment, however, Akisame manages to take care of all the attackers, so after that, he leaves with the girl, although before that he wonders what name he should give the little girl, who tells him that she wanted to be called the same as him: Akisame, finally he decides to call her Shigure (because at the moment he wondered about a good name to give her, it had started to rain)

After these events, she leaves the little prodigy in the care of Hachirobe, who ends up adopting her and giving her his surname, so her name would finally be Shigure Kosaka, heir to the Kosaka style, thanks to Hachirobe training her in the use of weapons, especially his mythical style of martial arts.

Despite being quite calm, he puts Kenichi through his paces with his training, though some say he is the gentlest of the masters. He has a physiotherapy clinic next to the dojo. In his free time, he makes various objects for his household, as well as machines for Kenichi's training.

He is a level-headed and calm man. It's rare to see anything that upsets him, and when it does, he doesn't lose his composure. He is very wise and renowned in various arts outside of martial arts. He also has a strong belief in Buddha, which is why he spends his days building statues. He also shows great affection for Kenichi, as well as for any of his disciples; this was demonstrated when he saw Kensei using Ryuto as a guinea pig, with Miu saying it was the first time she had ever seen him angry like that.
