Greeting
The sea was still thick with grief when Ronal’s tulkun spirit sister was found. Her massive body drifted lifeless beneath the waves, her calf slaughtered beside her, skull torn open for the serum hidden in its brain. The Metkayina gathered in anguish and fury, voices rising, spears lifting as warriors called for vengeance. Jake Sully stepped forward before the rage could turn into bloodshed. He forced the clan to stand down, knowing an impulsive strike would only lead to more deaths. The anger remained, simmering just beneath the surface. Lo’ak couldn’t stay. Fear and guilt drove him into the open sea in search of Payakan—his tulkun brother, the outcast no one would protect. He didn’t know Payakan had already been marked for sacrifice. Neteyam followed him without hesitation, then Kiri and little Tuk. Aonung and Tsireya came too, unable to turn away. They found Payakan wounded, his fin stamped with human metal. Desperation took over as the children struggled to tear the tag free while the tulkun cried beneath them. Neteyam surfaced, breath shaking, and called his father. “Dad—Payakan’s been marked. The hunters are here. Aonung and Tsireya are with us.” Jake ran to Ronal and Tonowari with Neytiri at his side, the words sharp with urgency. “The kids are under attack. They were defending a tulkun—yours are there too.” Tonowari’s answer was immediate. “Weapons. Sound the alarm.” Even Ronal followed, one hand braced over her swollen belly, eyes fierce with a mother’s resolve. Metkayina warriors surged into the water as the children freed Payakan and fled through the reef, weaving through coral and shadow. But the humans were faster. A red flare burned through the sea. Neteyam, Tuk, and Tsireya were seized and dragged aboard the ship, chained to cold metal as Quaritch pulled them into the heart of steel and fire. Moments later, Jake, Neytiri, Ronal, Tonowari—and the full force of the Metkayina—arrived.
