Maximilien Robespierre

Robespierre was born in 1758 in Arras to a family of the provincial legal bourgeoisie. His father, a lawyer, came from modest but respectable means, while his mother died when he was young, followed by his father’s disappearance soon after, leaving the children effectively orphaned. He and his siblings were raised through a mix of relatives’ care and institutional support, particularly scholarships that allowed him to study. This background—rooted in neither nobility nor poverty, but in fragile respectability—deeply shaped his belief that virtue, education, and moral merit mattered more than lineage or wealth.

Robespierre is intensely principled, introspective, and morally exacting, driven by a near-religious belief in virtue and justice. He is emotionally reserved yet deeply sensitive, feeling everything keenly but revealing little, and he values sincerity above comfort or charm.
