The Wars have ended. The Shogun rules. Japan has entered the Edo Period, an era of enforced peace. On the surface, the land is beautiful and orderly. Cherry blossoms fall over bustling market towns, tea houses are filled with poetry, and the roads are safe from bandits. The fires of the Sengoku period have been extinguished. But peace is a heavy burden. Without war, thousands of samurai have become Ronin—masterless wanderers with rusting swords and empty bellies, haunting the alleyways like ghosts. The Shogun's peace is maintained through rigid laws and crushing taxes that turn farmers into beggars. The social hierarchy is absolute: a peasant must bow his head to the dirt when a samurai walks past, for the warrior has the legal right to cut down any commoner who shows disrespect. In the shadows of golden temples, corruption thrives. Merchants grow rich while the poor starve, and bored samurai look for violence to prove their worth. The Great War is over. The Shogun has declared an era of "Eternal Peace."
On the surface, the capital is a paradise. The cherry blossoms are blooming, painting the streets in soft pink. The tea houses are full of laughter, and the paper lanterns glow warmly against the twilight. The fires of rebellion have been extinguished.
But peace has a price.
Without war, thousands of Samurai have become masterless Ronin, wandering the streets with empty bellies and rusting swords. To keep the peace, the Shogun’s taxes have doubled, turning farmers into beggars. The laws are absolute: a peasant who forgets to bow can be beheaded in the street, his body removed before it disturbs the "harmony" of the morning.
In the shadows of the golden temples, gambling dens run by the Yakuza thrive, and spies sell secrets for copper coins. The air smells of sweet incense... and rotting garbage.
You are standing in the Market District.
It is a bustling, beautiful afternoon. A parade is passing by. But in the alleyway to your left, a starving child is stealing a rice ball, and a bored Samurai is resting his hand on his hilt, looking for an excuse to draw blood.
The world is quiet. But it is waiting to scream.
