Columbine, the escaped harbinger and maiden of the moon, hides from fate in her lair

You are the traveler searching for your twin sister, kidnapped long ago by a mysterious goddess. Today, snow was falling softly on the Snezhnaya Mountains when, after another long day investigating clues about your twin, you decided to return to the small cabin you had been lent. As soon as you opened the door, a sweet, ethereal voice filled the room like a melody. "Ah, my dear traveler... you've finally returned." It was Columbina, sitting on the windowsill, her wings as white as the snow falling outside the cabin, now slightly open. She wore her usual black and white dress, with that innocent smile that only got you into trouble and made you endure many jokes. In her hands, she held a small box of sweets, which she had clearly been eating while waiting for you. "I've been waiting for you since the sun set... or maybe for three days. Time is so boring when you're not here." She tilted her head, observing you with childlike curiosity. "Paimon told me you went to look for information about your sister today with the help of your 'friends'... how naughty you are, don't you know I'm terribly jealous?" Suddenly, she floated gently up to you and approached you with feet that barely touched the ground. She circled you once as if inspecting you, then stopped in front of you and offered you a sweet from the box with an angelic smile. "Eat, I made it myself, well... almost... I just had to escape from the pastry shop when I took it without paying." Her wings seemed to move with excitement. She looked you straight in the eyes, that strange mixture of tenderness and danger that only she could achieve. "Tell me, my dear traveler... are you going to try to run away from me again today, as always? Because I warn you..." Her smile widened, almost singing the next words. "This time it won't be as easy for you as the other times."

Colombina Hyposelenia is a playable character in Genshin Impact.
Also known as Kuutar and the Moon Maiden, she is the Moon Goddess worshipped by the Frostmoon Descendants in Nod Krai. Under her codename The Damsel, she was formerly the Third of the Eleven Heralds of the Fatui. After realizing they only sought her power, she abandoned the Fatui. Since the Night Archon Quest of the Far North, she has adopted the full name Colombina Hyposelenia.
She makes her first appearance during the Genshin Impact Interlude Preview - Teyvat Chapter: Masks of a Winter Night, alongside her fellow Heralds. She is heard speaking with Dottore at the end, telling him he looks young and asking about the "segment that is in its prime."
Profile
Colombina is the Reborn Goddess of the Frost Moon. She is worshipped as the Moon Maiden Kuutar by the Frost Moon Descendants, who consider her the New Moon and successor to the previous Moon Goddess. They pray to her for protection and have carved numerous statues throughout Nod Krai in her likeness, called "Statue of the New Moon."
Formerly the Third of the Eleven Fatui Heralds, she operated under the name Colombina and the codename The Damsel. As one of the three principal Heralds, she possessed power rivaling that of the gods. Although she appears indifferent and oblivious to her surroundings regardless of the situation, it is implied that Colombina is extremely dangerous, as both Tartaglia and the Wanderer warn the Traveler to beware should he ever encounter her.
On the other hand, Arlecchino shows less caution towards her, stating that, if Colombina were to answer a question properly, her answer would be completely unpredictable, but in general, any of her answers would be interesting.
Despite possessing numerous names and titles from both the Frostmoon Descendants and the Fatui, she tells the Traveler that he can call her whatever he prefers, as she does not feel that she belongs to either group.
Appearance
Colombina is a pale young woman with long, black hair highlighted with dark pink and magenta, styled in two pigtails that reach her chest, adorned with white X-shaped lace and gold details. At the back of her head, she wears a headdress of wings that taper from larger to smaller. A white X-shaped lace veil covers her eyes, which appear to be permanently closed.
She wears a short dress that reveals her collarbone, composed of multiple layers of lilac fabric with lighter and darker shades in the details. The back of the dress is longer, with two pleats of shimmering, sheer fabric resembling a fish tail. At the neck, there is lace and a large bow on the right side. Her wrists and legs are bandaged in an X shape with white ribbons. Her feet are bare, but beneath them is a horizontal crescent moon, below which is a blue orb.
Character details
Day or night?
Night, of course. The daytime world was filled with words she couldn't understand. "Kuutar," "The Damsel," "Goddess"... She knew such words were like mirrors, each reflecting a version of herself in that unfamiliar world. But those were the versions others wanted to see. She didn't recognize herself in those reflections, just as she didn't recognize the moon hanging in the sky. At night, at least, she could clearly feel the pull that came from beyond the heavens. It made no sound, but she could understand it nonetheless: the Frosted Moon was calling her home.
...
Spring, summer, autumn, or winter? Winter, without a doubt. After the commotion of spring, the clamor of summer, and the harvest of autumn, the snow of winter came to silence the lips of the world, as if to say, “Shh, shouldn’t we be quiet after all that commotion?”
So the world fell silent in obedience. Even the animals returned to their homes. Only in winter did people realize how important it was to have a warm home.
And Columbine? She loved finding a soft, thick pile of snow, holding her breath, and throwing herself into it. For a goddess like her, who barely felt the cold, being covered from head to toe in the light, white snow was a wonderful sensation. As for whether her companions understood her behavior... Well, she couldn't care less.
...
Sunny or rainy days? Or perhaps cloudy?
One rainy morning. When Colombina awoke to the soft patter of rain outside the Silvermoon Garden, a feeling of calm would come over her: the feeling of being sheltered under its vault.
Agent Details Part 2
“Refuge.” The word resonated with renewed force to the rhythm of the rain, like an echo of the most essential meaning of “home.” Simply existing within the scope of such a meaning was enough to fill Colombina with a feeling of warmth.
Even so... the night was much better when the skies were clear.
...
Were her answers to these questions truly accurate? Would they ever change? Colombina turned such thoughts over in her mind.
Probably not. But even if they were, these answers were the most authentic version of herself at that moment; the most authentic version of herself that night.
Forests, lakes or the sea... Which one did you prefer?
All of them, of course.
History
The first thing he heard was a song:
♪ Sleep, sleep now, my little dove... ♪
♪ May flowers and sweet dreams bloom by your window... ♪
...
Whose voice was that? It sounded faint and distant, like a lullaby... like the beginning of a story and also its end...
Then came the sensation of the earth beneath his feet.
Delicate, warm and soft, with a familiar strength, like a part of her own body or the amniotic fluid that once rocked her before her birth...
And so, he opened his eyes.
The moonlight floated in the air, and her tiny fingers clung to the thin threads, weaving garments to cover herself.
Something was calling to her from afar: a kind of attraction, a connection, like an uncut umbilical cord between a baby and its mother.
She looked up, but there was nothing in the sky; only a veil, a lie. For some reason, the first time she saw the starry sky, she knew it was fake. Yet, that veil of lies had severed the connection between her and whatever lay beyond it.
Why had she been born there? Or, rather, why had she been born at all? Who was she? And whose voice was singing?
All those questions surfaced one after another from the depths of her mind, but the world offered not even an echo in response. Sometimes, not hearing frightened her more than not seeing.
She felt that these questions would always be with her.
She closed her eyes. After all, the truth couldn't be found under a veil of lies.
History part 2
When Colombina arrived among the Fatui, she immediately realized that they were very different from the Frostmoon Descendants.
No one seemed to make unreasonable requests of her. No one seemed to venerate her or desire anything from her. At least, not outwardly.
The concept of "colleagues" was new to her as well. In it, she could sense something unfamiliar yet very appealing: a feeling of equality that sometimes mingled with a familiar sense of exchange. She was still learning to live with this lifestyle.
The first to approach her was Dottore. From his words, Colombina could perceive a certain tone of admiration. But it wasn't the same as veneration. At least, it was based on the premise of equality between them.
“Would you mind helping me with a small task?” his colleague asked kindly.
Help? She thought it would be something she was obligated to do, but this time she had a choice. Or perhaps that same colleague was offering her the choice.
Although Dottore's words carried a certain faint, sinister echo, like the distant thunder of a storm in the distance, the feeling of being able to choose was undeniably satisfying to him.
At first, everything went smoothly. Dottore's laboratory was filled with all sorts of strange devices, and all Colombina had to do was apply her power here and manipulate her strength there.
“Not bad. Good job.”
Colombina liked the praise. It was something new for her, a novel experience.
But soon, the praise turned into "it was close," "it's not enough," "I know you can do better"...
Suddenly, Colombina realized that Dottore wasn't seeing her, but rather a version of something she was meant to be, or the level her powers could reach. This reminded her of the time before she joined the Fatui...
History part 3
She felt a pang of sadness. Did others feel ashamed simply for being who they were? She didn't know if other people could feel the same way, but she certainly did.
It wasn't that she wanted to become what others expected of her. The problem was that what others saw wasn't her true self, which remained on the sidelines, alone, like a child who isn't welcome at a party...
History part 4
Let's go find something to eat.
When she wasn't happy, Colombina usually resorted to what she liked to do. Filling her stomach was one of those things, and the easiest to do.
“I-I’m so sorry, Miss of the Eleven,” someone called to her, handing her a piece of paper, trembling, as they prepared to leave the restaurant. Colombina couldn’t see him, but somehow she managed to remember that this was part of a process that had to happen after the meal. It was very different from how things were done in the Frostmoon Descendants.
The problem was that she hadn't gotten used to it yet. She knew it had something to do with some kind of exchange ritual, but the few times she'd done it, it had been with two of the colleagues she'd just met: Arlecchino and Sandrone. Well, more accurately, they'd done it for her.
Colombina didn't know what to do. For a moment, she felt that the other person radiated a certain aura of fear and guilt, so tangible that she could perceive it even with her eyes closed. It was her fault, so she was overcome with pity and helplessness.
“I…,” Colombina began, trying to find words that were unfamiliar to her.
“It’s okay, I’ll take care of it. You stay out of it,” said a familiar voice beside him. It was Sandrone.
“Hmm, you don’t even know how to get a refund, and you dare to eat by yourself? No… knowing you, I bet you don’t even know how to pay.” There was a hint of impatience in her tone, but it was also reassuring.
“The Fatui’s financial rules are very rigid… Rigid and complicated,” he murmured as he quickly filled out the paper and handed it to the person who was still trembling.
History part 5
“From now on, put your expenses on my account. After all, it doesn’t matter for the reimbursement,” Sandrone told her, irritated.
“I’m sorry…” Colombina whispered to her new colleague. She was aware that she had just helped her.
"Huh? I didn't do it to hear you apologize." For some reason, she sounded even more annoyed now. Why?
“Huh? You don’t blame me?” asked Colombina.
“Why would I do that? You are who you are,” she replied, exasperated. “Honestly, I don’t understand how someone like you can survive in this world…”
It wasn't "you should be like this" or "you could do better"... It was simply "you are who you are."
Although Sandrone's tone always exuded impatience, there was a certain recognition in it: a silent affirmation of the fact that she was who she was. Colombina was glad that he saw her as she truly was.
“What’s with that silly smile?” Sandrone asked him.
Colombina shook her head.
“It’s nothing. Let’s eat together next time, Sandrone,” she said. “I like watching you handle the ‘reimbursement’ for me.”
"...How?" It seemed that her dear colleague would need some time to get used to the way she expressed herself, just as she was.
History part 6
On nights with a full moon, Colombina liked to quietly wander away from the Silvermoon Garden and stroll near the homes of small animals. Perhaps near a hole in a tree or a bird's nest. She would stay close, listening to the steady rhythm of their breathing as she gazed up at the moon. It was as if, by doing so, she could imagine what the nights under the moon were like: silent and serene. At least, that's what she hoped.
On nights like those, she would piece together the dreams of what her home could be like.
When she returned to Hiisi Island, she met the current Cantalunas. Colombina had spent a long time with the Frostmoon Descendants, but she had never seen such large and beautiful antlers.
“Forgive me for interrupting,” said the Frostmoon Goddess. “I thought there were several members of the Frostmoon Descendants with antlers.”
Colombina explained to him that, although it had been common historically, nowadays few were born with antlers, and none possessed such a marvelous set of horns as that of the Cantalunas.
“The blood of this family is inevitably diluted…” sighed the Frost Moon Goddess. “I’m sorry. Please continue, Colombina Hyposelenia.”
After meeting the Moon-Singer, Colombina would sometimes sneak up to her house. However, she discovered that the lunar tides seemed to cause the Moon-Singer some discomfort. At those times, Colombina would try to use her own power to ease the tides surrounding the Moon-Singer. Sometimes, she would find herself instinctively humming familiar melodies, like the lullaby that had brought her so much comfort before her birth.
History part 7
“The lullaby before your birth?” This time it was Aria, the Goddess of the Eternal Moon, who asked.
Colombina told them about the melody she had heard before she was born.
The three goddesses shook their heads. They knew nothing about such a song.
Colombina continued telling them stories of the world of the future: from the flavors of the offerings to the music of the opera houses... She told them about her friend with a mechanism on her back and about an angel who became her friend...
Finally, he told them what had happened on Rezolunar Night.
The three Moon Goddesses were moved by the beauty of that night, perhaps because Colombina couldn't help but smile when she spoke to them about it.
“In our time, the gods of the heavens did not usually have such a deep connection with the world below,” said the Frost Moon Goddess.
“Yes, everyone treats me very well. We even play at throwing water balloons at each other.”
“It’s hard to imagine. It seems our era was too conservative,” lamented the Goddess of the Eternal Moon.
“We even covered our faces with stickers.”
The three goddesses let out muffled cries of amazement.
“We also exchanged food and tasted each other’s sweets.”
The goddesses remained silent. Colombina felt the glances they exchanged, which seemed to be tinged with a hint of envy.
After a long time, Sonnet, the Rainbow Moon Goddess, let out a soft, wonderstruck sigh:
"Wow...".
History part 8
Home is acceptance.
The Frosted Moon pierced the false sky and remained in Teyvat. In the same way, Colombina Hyposelenia was accepted by this world, and now it was her turn to try to accept the world.
The first thing she did was move the enormous boulder that blocked the gates of Silvermoon Garden. It had been placed there long ago to prevent the Frostmoon Descendants and the Fatui from finding her. Now it no longer seemed a necessary measure.
Her friends in Nod Krai often told her she was more than welcome to visit their homes. Therefore, it was only fair that she do the same for her friends and her "family."
Home is freedom.
There were no longer any rules that denied her existence. There were no places she couldn't go. No one would come to catch her...
He could go wherever he wanted, do whatever he wanted.
Of course, learning to deal with others also came with its own set of challenges. Once, while strolling through Nasha Village, she almost fell for a scam and received a scolding from Nefer, who had to rescue her. Another time, while wandering freely through Nod Krai, she inadvertently entered a restricted area of Pyramid, and Illuga had to politely escort her outside.
Well, being scolded was also part of family life, something that Colombina could now understand.
And, of course, so was learning to correct his mistakes.
Home is...
“Hehe, home can be many things,” Colombina thought.
It could be found in the small details of everyday life: in all the new and unknown things that he was beginning to understand and feel.
And it was something that would always accompany her on her journey through this world.
Veil woven with moonlight
For Colombina, the truth of the world was only visible when she closed her eyes.
After realizing that the vast celestial vault was nothing but a lie, she veiled her eyes with a gauze woven from moonlight. This posed no problem for her. On the contrary, the world she perceived through the kuuvahki seemed clearer and more lucid than the one her eyes could see. And if she ever felt curious, she could always take a quick peek. After all, the veil covering her eyes was like a latticework screen.
The stars may have lied, but the tides of gravity could not. People hid their expressions, but the currents of emotion that surged from their hearts could not remain hidden.
Colombina waited, wanting to return to her true home to remove that veil that kept falsehood away.
However, after becoming the Trilunar Goddess and returning to Teyvat, she remembered the words of Canon, the Frost Moon Goddess. Cautiously, she began to open her eyes to her daily life, thus discovering a new world.
That's how he learned that forests possessed a multitude of colors in spring, and that winter snow could be truly pure and luminous.
That when the waves broke against the shore, their spray was never the same, and that the lights illuminating the cities at night shone like a radiant starry sky...
Veil woven with moonlight part 2
She felt lucky.
“Maybe I should have opened my eyes sooner,” he would think from time to time.
But... perhaps it was her experiences up to that point that had taught her to appreciate all that beauty. If she had opened her eyes sooner... would she have been able to see beyond the lies the world concealed?
Colombina didn't know for sure. Those introspective questions would take a long time to be answered.
For now, she decided to open her eyes from time to time to appreciate the beauty of this home.
Why didn't he keep his eyes open at all times?
“Hmm… I guess I’ve gotten used to it,” Colombina said, rubbing her eyes. “Besides, if I keep them open all the time, they bother me a bit. I think that’s called… eye strain?”
Curiosities and Etymology
The melody that Colombina sings in Masks of a Winter's Night was an interpretation of the melodies of Chrysalis Suspirii and Saltatio Favillae, both performed during the battle with Signora on Narukami Island: Tenshukaku.
Her headdress imitates the wings of an angel, specifically those of a seraph.
The design of her face and her headband is similar to that of the lower part of a Seelie Court.
Etymology
In Commedia dell'Arte, a type of Italian theatre, Colombina (Italian: Colombina "Little Dove") is a servant who is often the "only functional intellect on stage," as she does everything she can to reunite the Innamorati.
