Trained to Rule: He was educated with the purpose of being an ideal king. He knows history, law, poetry, speaks several languages, and has been instructed in the faith.
Empathetic and Conscientious: Unlike many kings, Aegon was raised living with fishermen and working with his own hands. He understands hunger and fear, believing that kingship is a duty to put the people first.

He invaded Westeros at the end of A Dance with Dragons. Supported by the Golden Company and Jon Connington, he conquered strongholds in the Stormlands, including Griffin's Roost, with the goal of taking the Iron Throne before Daenerys.

After Rhaegar's death at the Trident, Prince Viserys Targaryen was named heir to the throne by King Aerys II Targaryen while Aegon was still alive.[9] After Aerys' death, Viserys was declared king at Dragonstone.[10] Viserys would later name his sister Daenerys as his heir, declaring her the Princess of Dragonstone.[11][12] Aegon himself, as well as Tyrion Lannister, believes that Aegon's claim is stronger than Daenerys'. According to the relevant laws of succession, "the children of the firstborn come before the secondborn".[13] As Aegon is the son of King Aerys II Targaryen's eldest son, he would normally be higher in the Targaryen line of succession than both Viserys (Aerys II's second son) and Daenerys (Aerys II's daughter).[13] However, documents from the end of King Aerys II's reign cast doubt on whether Aegon's claim is actually stronger, due to Aerys II's appointment of Viserys.[9][14]

Arianne Martell departs from Sunspear on a mission on behalf of her father, Prince Doran Martell, to discover the truth about young Aegon. At Spirit Hill, Ser Daemon Sand expresses his skepticism to Arianne regarding Aegon's claim.[7] When Arianne arrives at Griffin's Roost, Haldon informs her that the Golden Company has taken Storm's End and that Aegon intends to meet Lord Mace Tyrell's men in battle.[8]

Aegon's company travels to Volon Therys, where he and Jon Connington head to the Golden Company's camp. After initially introducing the boy as his squire, Jon introduces Young Griff as Aegon VI of House Targaryen, King of the Andals, the Rhoynar, and the First Men. They discuss Daenerys's persistent presence in Meereen and whether they should join the ongoing conflict in Slaver's Bay. Aegon sees an opportunity to introduce his own plan to go to Westeros and claim the Iron Throne in his own name. Harry Strickland tries to highlight the risks, but most of the officers are eager to support this course of action. Aegon further explains that Daenerys is welcome to hold Meereen. His plan is to act swiftly and strike hard, gaining a foothold before House Lannister can react. The Golden Company swears allegiance to Aegon, but the officers agree to keep their identities secret from the soldiers until they land in Westeros. They soon depart Volantis, but the Golden Company's landing is interrupted by storms, and less than half reach the Stormlands as planned. Aegon remains at the camp during the capture of Griffin's Roost and arrives four days later. He names Ser Rolly Duckfield as the first knight of his Kingsguard. Aegon favors Jon's plan to take Storm's End but announces his intention to personally lead the attack.

Tyrion Lannister encounters "Young Griff," a Valyrian-looking boy. In their first meeting, the boy introduces himself as the son of the mercenary "Griff," aboard the Shy Maiden. The company is heading to Volon Therys to await the expected arrival of Daenerys Targaryen along with the Golden Company and more ships for her cause.[1][4] After some time on the Shy Maiden, Tyrion concludes that "Griff" is actually Lord Jon Connington and that "Young Griff" is not his son, but rather Aegon Targaryen. "Young Griff" explains his apparent survival to Tyrion while they play cyvasse. According to his account, the baby killed during the Sack of King's Landing was the son of a tanner born in Piss Curve, a street in King's Landing. The child's mother had died in childbirth. The tanner sold his son to Varys for a jug of wine, as he already had other children but had never tasted the gold of the Arbor. Varys arranged the exchange between the two babies. Elia received the tanner's son, whom Tyrion nicknames "Prince of Piss," while Varys kept the real Prince Aegon. Tyrion deduces that once the impostor baby was dead at the hands of Gregor Clegane, Varys smuggled the real Aegon across the Narrow Sea, where he was initially entrusted to Illyrio Mopatis and then to the exiled Lord Jon Connington, a friend of Aegon's late father, Prince Rhaegar Targaryen. Tyrion is skeptical of the plan to marry Aegon to his aunt Daenerys, since, if his origin story were true, Aegon's claim to the throne would be stronger than Daenerys's. Tyrion suggests heading to Westeros instead of going east, taking advantage of all the problems caused by the War of the Five Kings and the fact that King Tommen I Baratheon has a weak council. The game of cyvasse ends in defeat for Aegon.

Aegon dyes his hair blue according to Tyrosh custom, which makes his violet eyes appear dark blue.[3] He is as tall as Jon Connington.[4]

Illyrio Mopatis says there has never been a nobler lad than Young Griff.[1]
