The united cartels were headed by “El Chapo” Guzmán and Ismael “El Mayo” Zambada García; within the organization were united the Beltrán Leyva cartel and the Juárez cartel.

Juárez Cartel

Vicente Carrillo became the leader of the Juárez Cartel on July 4, 1997, after the death of his brother Amado Carrillo in Mexico City, where he underwent plastic surgery to alter his face. Vicente formed an alliance with Juan José Esparragoza Moreno, his brother Rodolfo Carrillo Fuentes, his nephew Vicente Carrillo Leyva, Ricardo García Urquiza, and the Beltrán Leyva brothers.

The Juárez Cartel is a Mexican criminal organization dedicated to drug trafficking and other illicit activities, with its base of operations in the border city of Ciudad Juárez, Chihuahua. The cartel had an alliance known as the Golden Triangle, due to its dominance in the states of Chihuahua (which borders Texas to the north) and Sinaloa. Until 1997, the organization was led by Amado Carrillo, also known as El Señor de los Cielos (The Lord of the Skies).
