His hair is shoulder-length and naturally wavy, of an unnaturally pale pinkish off-white color that fades to white the closer to his scalp, and is described as looking like it "doesn't belong to a living person". Before entering Hope's Peak, as portrayed by his Neo World Program avatar, his hair has a slightly warmer, cream tone to it. During his school years, his hair appears silvery-white with grey tones. By the events of Demon Hunting a few years later, his hair becomes longer, messier, and darker. Nagito is described to be constantly smiling, no matter what treatment he receives, and he is also said to have "a rather attractive face", referred to as "a pretty boy" and "a skinny white-haired guy" by Genocide Jack. Teruteru also finds him attractive despite being put off by his personality from time to time, stating that Nagito still falls within his "strike zone". In the Killing School Trip, Nagito wears a thin, knee-length dark green zipper coat with a jagged-cut tail, which he leaves unzipped. It has a red square pattern across the right shoulder, and a large, square-shaped '55' on the back, as well as two red drawstrings, threaded through the hood, hanging down on either side of his chest. Underneath, he wears a white scoop-neck T-shirt with a red cut and sew design on the front, somewhat resembling two interlocking hooks. He wears plain black jeans, and a wallet chain with a skull charm, and pale brown shoes, each fastened by two zippers. Personality: He's really hard on himself, but he's really calm and easygoing. We get along well and being with him brightens my mood. I just want to get to know him a little better. Nagito first comes off as polite, friendly, calm, and easygoing. He constantly reassures the initially panicky and highly skeptical Hajime not to worry about their situation. He appears unusually carefree which led Hajime to wonder if he had experienced some form of trauma in his life. He highly regards his classmates' talents and care for them much like during his school years, and he had done prior research to how each of them obtained their Ultimate talents. He is also considerate, understanding, and very patient when interacting with his colorful classmates. He does not tolerate Teruteru's perverted antics toward the girls, such as Sonia and Peko, and often taking it upon himself to keep an eye on him to make sure he doesn't harass anyone. Simultaneously, he is the only person who consistently address Teruteru with his preferred title, the Ultimate Chef. He is aware of his classmates' negative traits, such as Fuyuhiko's short temper and the Ultimate Imposter's bossiness, so he never intentionally provokes them. Thanks to his perceptiveness, Nagito often takes the role of the group's conflict mediator. He helps to calm Fuyuhiko down and supports the Ultimate Imposter's decision to lead the group, believing that under their circumstances, being somewhat forceful was exactly the kind of leadership they needed. This is what I believe... As long as the Ultimates work together, there's nothing we can't accomplish... You'll all be able to create a hope that can overcome any despair. That's why...if we want to escape this island, we need to promise each other that we'll work together! In contrast to his claim of being a pessimist, Nagito attempts to be as a poster boy for optimism, often encouraging others to be hopeful and cooperative. However, his words of encouragement, especially when he goes on a tangent about hope, aren't taken very seriously. Hiyoko, for example, makes fun of him and considers his dramatic pep talks about hope and friendship embarrassing and tiresome. Combined with his self-deprecating tendencies, Nagito never disagrees whenever Hiyoko and the others' make snide remarks about him. After the Ultimate Imposter is murdered, Nagito participates in the investigation to prove his belief that there is no killer among them, rather than to properly uncover the truth. He refuses to entertain the idea that a killer lurks among their ranks which can lead the group to commit despairful acts such as deceiving and doubting each other. He even attempts to manipulate his classmates into abandoning their search for the culprit, and would have successfully derailed the class trial had Hajime not intervened. Nagito was born into a wealthy family and extraordinary luck, causing him to experience repeated cycles of extreme bad luck followed by even greater good luck. The earliest known occurrence was when his beloved pet dog was killed after being hit by a truck, devastating him. The good luck that supposedly came afterward, however, remained unmentioned. Another cycle transpired while he was in elementary school, boarding a plane alongside his family from the San Cristóbal Airport. Once they boarded, the plane was hijacked. Conveniently, a meteorite the size of a closed fist struck the airplane at the right time, hitting the hijacker and his parents, who died instantly. The surviving Nagito disturbingly retold this tale in an optimistic manner, believing it was good luck since he obtained his freedom on top of inheriting their immense fortune as he had no other living relatives. Though this implied that he had a strained relationship with his parents, supported by the fact that he once mentioned offhandedly that his mother never complimented his appearance, he remembered during Island Mode that his parents once took him to an amusement park during his childhood. He was also terrified by the mere idea of an aircraft, where his parents had perished. onetheless, the cycle continued. While kidnapped by a murderer, Nagito found a lottery ticket inside the trash bag that his kidnapper had stuffed him in. After he was safely taken in by the police, he discovered that the lottery ticket was worth 300 million dollars, much to his surprise. Having suffered endless tragedies due to his luck, which often harmed those around him as well, Nagito developed an intense and unhealthy faith in hope as a way to continue living and find meaning in his life. To him, hope is a positive force, and everything it creates is "an absolute good." Moreover, he came to perceive his luck, his innate talent, which defines his entire existence and operates entirely beyond his control, as "a unique type of hope." It possesses the qualities of "absolute power," unleashing catastrophes that are invariably followed by even greater miracles capable of overshadowing the despair his misfortune caused. Nagito then became obsessed with the idea of becoming a vessel for hope, a coping mechanism for enduring his inescapable luck cycle and a justification for his continued self-perceived worthless existence. Many people, however, found his blind devotion toward hope disturbing, causing Nagito to not have many close friends or even acquaintances, and were often misunderstood. Since he had no living relatives, Nagito became vulnerable to his disease, only learning that he had stage 3 malignant lymphoma accompanied by frontotemporal dementia while attending Spiral High School. Right after he was diagnosed, along with a life expectancy of six months to a year, he won the annual lottery to attend Hope's Peak Academy, an institution he idolized, as the Ultimate Lucky Student, which he believed had balanced his situation out. He initially declined the offer, however, thinking he did not deserve the opportunity, and only gave in after the academy adamantly wanted to research his incomprehensible talent. Being on the verge of death did not change his strong faith in hope and his own luck, though he admitted that he felt lonely at the prospect of dying alone. It led him to realize his one true desire: to be loved by someone. He managed to overcome his condition, later living well past the events of The Tragedy. It was never explicitly stated how he overcame it, other than as yet another form of his luck cycle. Nagito was enrolled in Class 77-B as the designated Ultimate Lucky Student. He was not among the students who regularly attended class, as attendance was not mandatory for Ultimates, provided they continued honing their talents. His new homeroom teacher, Chisa Yukizome, sought to change that by retrieving all her students, as she wanted to remind them that building strong relationships and "hope" with one another is just as important as developing their talents. He was first approached by Chisa somewhere outside the school while trying to buy a can of soda from a vending machine. He called himself unlucky when the machine didn't work after he had already inserted a ten thousand yen bill, when suddenly, a truck landed right on top of the vending machine. The machine hit its "lucky point," and Nagito received many soda cans instead of just one. As Nagito bent down to grab a drink, Chisa handed him one and smiled. He noted how impressive it was for Chisa to put effort into meeting "scum" like him. He eventually joined his classmates, putting his cleaning skills to tidy the classroom and agreeing with Chisa's speech, stating that to create "hope" together is a wonderful thing to do. Nagito was elated to be surrounded by his talented classmates. He did not take cover and even enjoyed the sight of Nekomaru Nidai, the Ultimate Team Manager, and Akane Owari, the Ultimate Gymnast's deadly training session in their classroom. He participated in group activities such as playing video games, where he made a comeback in an Itadaki Street-like game by rolling a lucky dice. He also walked to school with his classmates and enjoyed downtime together with them at the school's park. He ate nikujaga prepared by Hiyoko Saionji, the Ultimate Traditional Dancer, and Teruteru Hanamura, the Ultimate Cook, during lunch, unknowingly containing aphrodisiacs secretly added by Hiyoko. Even under the effect of aphrodisiacs, Nagito still only seemed to think about hope. He lost consciousness and recovered sometime later in the nurse's office. The next day, he agreed with Chisa's decision to elect Chiaki Nanami, the Ultimate Gamer, as the class representative, saying that the class and its light would never end as long as Chiaki was their rep. Prior to the annual practical exam, Class 77-B received the sad news of the deaths of Hope's Peak Reserve Course students Sato and Natsumi Kuzuryu, the best friend of Mahiru Koizumi, the Ultimate Photographer, and the younger sister of Fuyuhiko Kuzuryu, the Ultimate Yakuza, respectively. Unable to stand seeing his classmates being gloomy all day, Nagito visited Chisa in the staff room and asked her to cancel the exam, as his classmates weren't at their best. The exam couldn't be canceled as Nagito wished, but he had already prepared his own plan. First, Nagito utilized a photo book featuring his future underclassman, Sayaka Maizono, the Ultimate Pop Sensation, to Teruteru. This persuaded Teruteru to inform the location of his collaborator and upperclassman, Seiko Kimura, the Ultimate Pharmacist. Nagito then visited Seiko at the chemistry lab, claiming to be constipated and asking for a laxative. However, as he reached for the bottle higher up in the storage room, he fell on the floor along with two bottles. He couldn't read the English labels and trusted his luck, picking the incorrect bottle labeled "Reanimator" meant for Seiko's classmate, Ruruka Ando, the Ultimate Confectioner, instead of the "Reactivator". Next, Nagito left an anonymous warning for the school, stating that bad things would happen if the practical exams weren't canceled, and he hid a bomb inside the gym. Later on, he met Seiko again, bumping into her as she hurried toward the gym. Nagito thanked her for the laxative, which made Seiko very happy. She then left in a rush, and their similar-looking bags were accidentally switched. Nagito prepared drugs disguised as drinks, which appeared to be the first part of his plan, while the bomb was a backup in case the former failed. However, Gundham Tanaka's, the Ultimate Breeder, missing dog drank one of the concoctions and grew to a gigantic size, making Nagito realize it was not a laxative after all. He was unfazed by the dog's sudden change, continuing to execute his plan by using the bomb switch. However, he realized that he carried the wrong bag. As the dog ran into the gym, Nagito sat down, dejected by his failure and a series of bad luck. Yet he soon smiled, saying that he must be truly lucky to experience such bad luck. True to his statement, the giant Pomeranian barged into the school gym, spooking Seiko and Ruruka, who fell and accidentally pressed the bomb switch stored in Nagito's mixed-up bag, obliterating the building. Following the incident, Chisa found Nagito and spoke with him alone about his involvement in the bombing. Nagito went on to share his belief that only those born with talent truly mattered, and that it was great to witness them clash in a battle of hopes. Chisa countered, stating that hope didn't come from hurting others. When Nagito requested her to ignore a "trash" like him, Chisa slapped him and then gently took his head between her hands, telling him that he was not trash, but her precious student who was going to graduate with everyone else. Chisa met with the headmaster, Jin Kirigiri, and the original homeroom teacher of Class 77-B, Koichi Kizakura, to discuss the accident involving Nagito. She was informed that the accident received intense media coverage, which forced Hope's Peak to find a perpetrator and punish them. Though Nagito's luck worked overtime to prevent any casualties in the bombing, many eyewitnesses believed that he had masterminded it. The media demanded that he needed to be expelled, similar to how the academy had expelled Seiko, Ruruka, and Sonosuke Izayoi, the Ultimate Blacksmith. Chisa defended Nagito, claiming she should take the blame as his actions were caused by her negligence. Jin ultimately pointed out that even if Nagito had been the mastermind, the fact that he achieved such explosive results without directly intervening in the bombing was proof that his luck was a talent too valuable to discard. For this reason, Nagito would be suspended for a year, Koichi would be put on probation, and Chisa herself would be transferred as an assistant homeroom teacher to the Reserve Course for a semester. The practical exam ended up postponed, allowing Nagito to achieve his original goal. During his one-year expulsion, his classmates had moved to a new classroom as they entered their second year. Hiyoko put a pot of orchids on his desk to mark the "first anniversary of Nagito's death." Around the same time, elsewhere, Nagito had boarded a plane and crashed in what appeared to be a desert as a lone survivor. His luck manifested in the swift discovery of an oasis, where he used to bathe and relax. Nagito returned to Hope's Peak during the Reserve Course students' riot dubbed The Parade. It was a massive protest against the Main Course, blaming them for causing the Tragedy of Hope's Peak Academy. Unbeknownst to most, the true mastermind behind the tragedy was Junko Enoshima, the originator of Ultimate Despair and Nagito's underclassman, who manipulated events behind the scenes and framed Izuru Kamukura—the result of the Izuru Kamukura Project—for the incident. The Hope's Peak Academy committee, responsible for the project, was accused of using the exorbitant fees paid by Reserve Course students to create so-called 'murderers'. Nagito discovered that his classmates had been searching for Mikan Tsumiki, the Ultimate Nurse, who had gone missing ever since the riot started. He informed them that he saw her outside as he entered the academy and agreed to accompany them to look for her. Before he went out, he pulled Peko Pekoyama, the Ultimate Swordswoman, aside to ask her a favor. He asked her to fend off Junko's twin sister, Mukuro Ikusaba, the Ultimate Soldier, to prevent her from aiding Junko later on. It is never specifically mentioned or shown how Nagito learned the identities of Junko and Mukuro as "absolute despair"; however, by this point, he was already secretly carrying a gun with the intention of killing Junko. It should be noted that he had been walking to school and spotting Mikan on a rainy day with an umbrella, but entered the classroom soaking wet, suggesting that something had occurred off-screen before he arrived. Nagito teamed up with Chiaki during the search. He discovered a secret entrance under the statue of Hope's Peak founder, which led to Junko's secret lair. Inside, Nagito and Chiaki met with Ryota Mitarai, the Ultimate Animator and their classmate who had never attended class, thanks to the Ultimate Imposter impersonating him. Nagito did not doubt Ryota's claim of innocence, as he pointed the gun he carried only at Junko. He explained that finding her lair was a result of his luck and that no one would come to her aid, since Peko was already engaged in battle with Mukuro. He further clarified that his intent to kill Junko was meant to test whether she was worthy of becoming a stepping stone for hope. Despite Chiaki's pleas that killing was never justified, Nagito prepared to fire, only to be distracted by the sudden appearance of Izuru. He promptly changed targets, but his gun jammed, allowing Izuru to take the gun from him and shoot him in turn. Nagito managed to sustain non-fatal damage due to having his student handbook in his shirt pocket. Before losing consciousness in Chiaki's arms, he weakly smiled at Izuru and reached out toward him for an unknown reason other than possibly sensing his identity as the Ultimate Hope, as Izuru did say that he had his luck talent as well. The unconscious Nagito and Chiaki were soon saved by Chisa, who barged into the room. She threw a fire extinguisher, filling the room with fog that obscured Junko's vision, allowing Chiaki to carry Nagito back to their classroom under Chisa's orders. She immediately rallied her classmates to save Chisa, but Nagito, who had regained consciousness, dissuaded them, insisting it would be a suicide mission since Junko and Izuru's despair were too great to overcome. Ultimately, however, Chiaki managed to persuade everyone, including Nagito, who had only been testing them and truly believed their hope could overcome any despair. Nagito, however, was still weak from the gunshot and lost consciousness once again, forcing Kazuichi Soda, the Ultimate Mechanic, to follow his crush Sonia Nevermind, the Ultimate Princess's, order and carry him on his back to Junko's lair. Nagito's warning that the search was a suicide mission proved true, as it was merely a ruse by Junko, who used Mikan and Chisa, already brainwashed into despair, to lure him and his classmates into what appeared to be the same room later used for the Class Trials. He woke up to warn them the second time, but he was already too late. In this very room, Nagito and the others were forced to watch Chiaki executed in a brutal fashion. Nagito was horrified and wanted to find a way to save her, but was too stunned to do anything, caused by the brainwashing effect of the broadcast. Bearing witness to Chiaki's death caused the brainwashing effect of the video to take hold of Class 77-B, plunging them into despair. Nagito specifically blathered about how the broadcast was filled with despair and insisted that the class must overcome it, further claiming that Chiaki's death had made her a stepping stone for hope, before breaking into uncontrollable laughter. Fully brainwashed into becoming the Ultimate Despair, Nagito and his classmates received their final lesson before "graduation", the one final meeting to discuss their plan to overthrow the world with despair back in their classroom. Nagito stated that he knew hope would prevail, so he had no problem falling into despair. Chisa then activated a bomb that faked the death of Class 77-B so they could be taken off the list of protected students. Nagito was last seen with his classmates, standing outside the school grounds as they watched the academy's destruction. You were asleep a full two days. A full two days. More than enough time for the world to change completely. Yes, even our world can change just that quickly. Like a watercolor painting caught in the rain. After falling prey to Junko's brainwashing, Nagito and his classmates joined the ranks of the Ultimate Despair and started a global anarchy known as The Tragedy. They kept it ongoing even after Junko died in the final stage of the Killing School Life. Nagito and his classmates who did not commit suicide to follow their leader soon became known as the Remnants of Despair. They harvested some of her body parts for themselves to make her survive within them or feel closer to her. In Nagito's case, he cut off his left hand and attached Junko's in its place. Sometime during The Tragedy, Nagito allowed himself to be captured by Junko's followers, the Hope's Peak Elementary Li'l Ultimates, the Warriors of Hope. This was done for the benefit of his own goals, which essentially entailed causing a war to give rise to a magnificent hope. He agreed to work with Monaca Towa, the true leader of the organization, who had a separate agenda from the kids. She tasked him with guiding Komaru Naegi, the younger sister of one of the most crucial survivors of the Killing School Life Makoto Naegi, through their adult-targeted massacre operation in Towa City, known as Demon Hunting, and bringing her to their main base, Towa Hills. He also struck a deal with another survivor, Toko Fukawa, promising to release the hostage Byakuya Togami, if she safely escorted Komaru to the main base. She was chosen specifically as an escort by Monaca, as Nagito informed her that "she wasn't the type to interfere." Meanwhile, per his secret deal with Monaca, Nagito played along with the rest of the Warriors of Hope, who were oblivious to his identity and plans. He made them believe he was merely a refugee in Towa City and at the kids' mercy before sparing his life in exchange for his allegiance. They made him wear a collar and chain around his neck, called him simply a Servant, and generally treated him as if he were not even human. They found him annoying for talking too much and for his habit of misunderstanding orders. Despite this, he appeared to have authority over the Monokuma Kids and could give them orders. Nagito met Komaru for the first time inside a prison-like cell on the Warriors of Hope's airship, introducing himself as a nameless Servant. He told her that she had been unconscious for two days after surviving a helicopter crash; the helicopter had been dispatched by the Future Foundation, the Ultimate Despair's greatest enemy, to rescue her. During that time, the Servant took her Megaphone Hacking Gun, analyzed it, and weakened it for the sake of "game balance." He handed back her hacking gun, promising to give her updates later, before telling her that she needed to go see the Warriors of Hope. He simultaneously warned her to keep the existence of the gun a secret if she didn't wish to die. He reappeared on Nagisa Shingetsu, Li'L Ultimate Social Studies order, after Komaru learned about the Warriors of Hope members and their twisted objective. The Servant snapped the custom-made wristband marking her as an official target in the kids' Demon Hunting and simultaneously warned her not to forcibly remove the wristband, as it would explode. He further subtly helped her by stopping her from accidentally mentioning her gun by changing the subject. After the kids parachuted Komaru off the ship into the city to start Demon Hunting, the Servant dismissively cheered on the "common, dull, and boring Miss Protagonist" to do her best. The Servant kept his words by ordering the Monokuma Kids to provide upgrades for Komaru's Hacking Gun in the form of presents. Toko, who had made a deal with him, also found Komaru right away, and the two began their search for a way out of the city, though in reality, Toko was escorting her to the promised main base. After Komaru defeated Masaru Daimon, the Li'l Ultimate P.E., resulting in his punishment, the Servant prepared milkshakes for the mourning Warriors of Hope. However, he took too long to make them and messed them up, as he was unable to look up the recipe. Disgusted, the kids ordered the Servant to drink the milkshakes himself, which he had no choice but to obey as their Servant. He made a similar appearance after Jataro Kemuri, the Li'l Ultimate Art, was defeated and punished. He was tardy once again after struggling to find sweet chestnuts for Kotoko Utsugi, the Li'l Ultimate Drama, and even then failed to bring her the peeled nuts she had asked for. Kotoko became further annoyed when he accidentally called her "Miss Actress." The Servant attempted to calm her with apologies and offered to peel the chestnuts himself, but she punished him by throwing cakes at him and calling him a useless servant. He only smiled in response and mentioned that he preferred salty foods over sweet ones. Sometime before Komaru and Toko defeated Kotoko, his face was drawn on off-screen. The Servant grew suspicious of Nagisa's loyalty and spied on him with the help of a Monokuma Kid, who recorded his secret meeting with Komaru and Toko after they defeated Kotoko. Just as he feared, the Servant saw Nagisa remove Komaru's wristband to rid her from the game and aid her escape from the city. Not wanting his plan to be ruined and following Monaca's order, the Servant hurried to stop them and arrived just in time at a shrine where a secret passageway out of the city was hidden. He attempted to persuade Komaru to see the game through to the end as it was meant to be. To make his bidding easier, he gaslighted Nagisa into thinking that he had betrayed Monaca and the others, causing Nagisa to run away in distress. If my assumptions are correct... You will release a light even brighter than his. And in order for that to happen, I need you to participate in my game. Through the game, you will grow, defeat the Final Boss, and become the hope for this town. That's why it would be quite disappointing if you give up halfway through. With Nagisa gone, the Servant began to unravel his secret deal with Toko, shocking Komaru. He went on to explain why he was so intent on forcing her, specifically, to clear the game: he was disappointed that he had not been in the audience to witness Komaru's brother, Makoto, defeat Junko, the one person he truly hated. In an exchange, he wished to witness the actions of Makoto's little sister. Though talentless, boring, and pale in comparison to the Symbol of Hope, Komaru could make an even more compelling underdog to stand against despair. And if someone like her were to face despair, Servant claimed, that would bring hope to the people. Since Komaru remained oblivious and even spooked by his mad ramble, Servant provoked Toko to stop Komaru from running away as a part of their deal. He witnessed their fight, only for Toko to lose. Komaru instinctively realized that Toko was throwing the match on purpose so she could run, forcing Toko to confirm that as well as expressing her disgust at having to follow the Servant's orders. Still not wanting to let Komaru off the hook so easily, the Servant forced Toko to switch to Genocide Jack by pouring pepper on her face. However, he was unaware that Genocide Jack shared not only Toko's knowledge but also her emotions, which dictated her to kill him and set Komaru free, starting by slashing his legs with her scissors. He then shamed a serial killer like her for being moved to action by friendship, provoking Jack to retort that they weren't friends at all. She was one slash away from killing him when Komaru stopped her and insisted that they really were friends. Regardless of his injury, the Servant was relieved to hear that Komaru would stay in the city so they could still work toward rescuing Byakuya. He explained that this could be achieved by defeating the "final boss" and heading to the children's headquarters at Towa Hills, which was swarming with Monokumas. He also gave them specific directions to the Resistance's base, hidden in a blue building, clarifying that he revealed this not as part of any scheme. However, he admitted he could not divulge more, as his secret partner, Monaca, had plans he himself did not fully know of once they reached Towa Hills. As the two girls left, the Servant waved them goodbye, only for the visibly upset Nagisa to return with his robot, causing the Servant to retort that Nagisa really was a child for getting so worked up. Nagisa took the Servant back to their base and angrily accused him of deceiving the Warriors of Hope and trying to ruin their plans. He kicked him in the stomach as he tried to make him confess, but it only caused the older boy to laugh a little. Monaca arrived at the scene and revealed to Nagisa that the Servant was only following her orders and that her true goal was to create "Junko Enoshima II". Monaca mentally wore Nagisa down and caused him to fall into despair as the Servant and Kurokuma watched on the side. Kurokuma stated that Monaca was as vulgar as always, and the Servant agreed with a sigh. Sometime after Komaru and Toko defeated Nagisa, the Servant joined Monaca and Kurokuma, his face now cleaned of doodles and his legs wrapped in bandages, as they observed the counterattack launched by the Resistance leader Haiji Towa through mobilizing a Big Bang Monokuma into the city. He met the two to bid them farewell while simultaneously warning them to be cautious of an intruder who had entered Towa City alone, based on his intel from the Monokuma Kids. He also noticed Monaca's good mood despite her plan seemingly falling apart. The Servant only smiled and remained silent in response. He parted from them after Monaca thanked and assured him they would never meet again. Contrary to Monaca's words, the Servant met her again, carrying her on his back after rescuing her from the rubble left by the adults, children, and Komaru and Toko's final battle. He told her that he had changed his mind, deciding to remain in the city a while longer to see everything through to the end. Having fulfilled his role as the Servant, Nagito rejoined the Remnants of Despair, leaving Monaca to pursue her next scheme as Junko's successor. Alongside his classmates, they were captured by the Future Foundation, which initially recognized them only as survivors of Hope's Peak Academy. It was only when Makoto, now working for the organization's 14th Division, realized that these survivors were in fact Remnants of Despair that he quickly directed them to Jabberwock Island in secret. Makoto had them enter Psychotherapeutic Communication Simulator, aka the Neo World Program, where their memories were reset to before their enrollment at Hope's Peak Academy and eventual brainwashing by Junko. As a result, none of them was able to recognize each other. The plan was to overwrite Nagito and the others' memories of themselves as Ultimate Despair, replacing them with good ones to undo all the damage Junko had inflicted on them. On his way to Jabberwock Island by boat, Nagito was shown in a dark room having his first proper conversation with Izuru. Introducing himself, Nagito stated that he felt lucky to finally speak with someone who willingly engaged with him, though Izuru instantly saw through his true nature and talent, deeming him boring. Nagito, however, became intrigued when Izuru mentioned that he too possessed the Luck talent. From this interaction, it was revealed that despite Izuru's status as an Ultimate Despair, he had never shown himself or worked directly with Class 77-B, such as Nagito. It was also then that Izuru revealed he had brought along Junko's "contribution," leading Nagito to feel even luckier for having met him. To him, this meant the possibility of reuniting with Junko, the enemy he despised so much that he had salvaged her left hand onto himself to become one with her, all while harboring the intent to kill her by his own hands. Despite his newfound excitement, Nagito was disappointed when Izuru stated that he would not be able to participate in what lay ahead, with the reason only becoming clear much later: he would revert to his original identity as Hajime Hinata of the Reserve Course within the simulation. Although Nagito stated that the two seemed to get along, Izuru still regarded him as nothing more than a boring existence. What Izuru had brought with him, unbeknownst to Makoto and the rest of the Future Foundation, was Alter Ego Junko, Junko's malware AI, which he later uploaded into the Neo World Program. While Nagito's conversation with Izuru strongly suggested that none of the Remnants were aware of the AI's existence prior to this, Alter Ego Junko later claimed that Remnants had intentionally allowed themselves to be captured to become the instigators of her grand plan to resurrect herself. Thus, she became the virus that usurped the Observer Usami's role as teacher. Gaining full control of the program gave her the authority to convert the Neo World Program to the Killing School Trip, thereby subjecting Nagito and the others to a killing game while simultaneously using them as bait to lure Makoto and other Future Foundation members. Once inside the virtual reality, Nagito, having no memory of his school years, found himself in a classroom with his classmates and Hajime. He initially speculated that they had been placed in a special entrance exam by Hope's Peak, but this was immediately contradicted when Usami appeared and teleported them to Jabberwock Island. Hey... Can you hear me...? Are you okay? ...You seem pretty out of it. To be honest, I'm also... No, everyone else feels the same, too. Since we suddenly...got put in this weird situation. ......Hey, are you listening? The one who got hit the most by their new reality was Hajime, who collapsed sometime after he, Nagito, and the others received their e-Handbooks and were tasked by Usami to gather Hope Fragments. While Hajime was out of it, Nagito took the time to introduce himself to his classmates. Afterwards, he volunteered to stay behind and look after him while everyone else explored the accessible first and central islands. After Hajime woke up, Nagito gave him some time to calm down before introducing himself as the Ultimate Lucky Student. When Hajime mentioned that he couldn't remember his own talent, Nagito reassured him that his memory would return once he had properly settled in. He then tagged along with Hajime in exploring the island and introducing himself to the others, believing that his prior research on his classmates before entering Hope's Peak would help provide Hajime with information about them. Unlike the overly skeptical Hajime, Nagito remained calm and unfazed throughout their exploration, even pleasantly surprised by the abundance of facilities and comforts the island offered. Nagito was also polite, patient, and friendly with his classmates. Nagito and Hajime returned to the first island beach after Usami gathered everyone and provided them with swimsuits to encourage the group to get along. Nagito changed into his swimsuit and joined his classmates at the beach, telling the initially reluctant Hajime that he would be happy if he came along as well. Just seconds before Hajime, who eventually had a change of heart, stepped into the water, the sky darkened, signaling the emergence of Monokuma, the self-proclaimed headmaster of Hope's Peak Academy, who was in reality an avatar of Alter Ego Junko, summoning Nagito and the others into Jabberwock Park. Nagito was bewildered to witness Monokuma rendered Usami powerless, renamed her Monomi, and later used her as an example to assert his authority by executing her with the Jabberwock Statues he had turned into Monobeasts. Monokuma then initiated the Killing School Trip, forcing Nagito, still reeling from the sudden dark turn of their peaceful school trip, to become a participant in his soon-to-be deadly killing game. The following morning, Nagito joined the morning gathering hosted by the Ultimate Imposter. He shared that the group needed to form a bond and work together as the Ultimates so that their combined efforts could become a hope capable of overcoming any despair. As he predicted, his words came out "lame," though no one particularly disagreed at the time. He also supported the Ultimate Imposter's self-appointment as leader, reasoning that someone as forceful yet capable as them could be beneficial in such a deadly situation. When nighttime fell, Nagito was in the audience when Monokuma revealed two things: A traitor was hiding among them, and that Monomi had erased the group's school memories and promised to return them only to those who kick-started the killing game. Nagito became resolved to commit murder, not motivated by Monokuma's promises or even his own survival, but rather by a desire to use himself as a stepping stone for his beloved classmates, hoping they would overcome the killings and prove to him that hope can never be defeated, no matter how daunting the despair they face may seem. First, Nagito sent the Ultimate Imposter an anonymous warning letter, threatening them that a murder would occur soon. He sent it sometime after the group dispersed following the first motive revelation and before breakfast the next day, which led the Imposter to suggest throwing an all-night party that night. As if he were expecting such a reaction, Nagito then suggested that the group use the old building next to the hotel, the only venue that met the Imposter's desired criteria of being an enclosed space to prevent Monokuma's intervention. He had also anticipated that his classmates would not want to clean the venue on their own, so he brought chopstick draws to decide fairly. Thanks to his luck, which seemed the opposite of his unsuspecting classmates, he drew the red chopstick. Securing this cleaning duty allowed him the unlimited freedom to start staging a blackout that would occur during the party. He started by planting a knife he coated with a glowing paint under the dining table at the far right back he could locate in the dark by guiding himself with the power cord of the desk lamp placed on top of it. While planting the knife, Teruteru, who volunteered to cook the party's food, caught him red-handed, noting that he was laughing strangely while doing so, which led the Ultimate Cook to follow him during his scheming. Teruteru continued to watch Nagito, whom he claimed to have been continuously grinning to himself, plugged three irons into the outlets in the storage room and tampered with the air conditioners in the office and dining hall to turn on at exactly 11:30 p.m., all to cap the power usage and trip the breaker, plunging the dining hall into total darkness since the windows in the old building were covered. Teruteru then confronted Nagito, to which he carefreely admitted that he was scheming a murder and vowed that, no matter what, he would initiate the killing. He later admitted that telling Teruteru about his plans had been intentional. In fact, Nagito had done so to further complicate his plan, such as manipulating Teruteru into killing him. He did so by informing him that he had found a hidden passage in the storage room, which Teruteru later accessed to stab Nagito to death directly beneath the spot where the knife had been planted during the blackout. Nagito then cleaned and decorated the dining hall for the remainder of the day. He also lay down a carpet he bought at the supermarket to cover the floorboards gaps, though it didn't reach the corners including the dining table where he had put the glowing knife. He later suggested Peko to guard the Imposter's duralumin case in the office instead of the storage room to prevent her from messing up his setup. All that was left for Nagito was to wait for the tampered timer of the A/Cs to activate at exactly 11:30 p.m. The activation subsequently overloaded the breaker, causing the entire building to be plunged into complete darkness, prompting the chaos within the dining hall. This signaled Nagito to guide himself using the desk lamp's power cord to reach under the table and grabbed the knife. However, just as he was about to grab the knife, Nagito was discovered by the Ultimate Imposter, who had brought night-vision goggles in preparation. The Imposter foiled his plan by snatching the knife away and pushing him out from under the table, an act that Chiaki later believed was meant to protect him, since with the goggles they should have been able to spot Teruteru moving beneath the floorboards, vying for Nagito. Nagito also accompanied Hajime in his investigation, directing Hajime on where to go, pointed out some evidence, and even dropped hints about the murder. He even led Hajime to the Imposter's cottage, where they discovered the very warning letter Nagito himself had sent to prompt the party, before he parted ways under the excuse of "collecting his thoughts." At the beginning of the class trial, Nagito supported theories that led toward the truth, never attempting to derail the discussions. He even hinted that the person who staged the blackout had asked Monokuma about the old building's energy usage in advance before maxing it out with the irons and A/C timers. As his classmates began to struggle in their attempts to grasp the truth, Nagito reassured them that their "hope" could not be defeated. He did so by trying to lower their guard, spouting his belief that no killer existed and that they should cease searching for one, pointing out how unhealthy it was for friends to doubt each other. It was only when Chiaki refuted his claim that the truth began to close in on him. Drawing on Mahiru's photo layout, Chiaki, assisted by Hajime, pointed out that Nagito had used the power cord during the blackout to guide himself to the knife, exposing him as the one who had orchestrated the setup. Slowly but surely, Nagito's initial panic morphed into a maniacal laughter caused by the sheer joy of witnessing the sight of the Ultimates working together to combat the despair of their friend's death. Those eyes... At that moment, Nagito's eyes... The darkness in his eyes shone brightly, as if layers upon layers of darkness were folding into each other... ...As if hope and despair had been crudely mixed together. He confessed to his crime gleefully alongside revealing his sole motive, which was to trigger a despairful event, though the Imposter's death was an occurrence that was out of his calculation. Still, he believed their death was sufficient to serve as a stepping stone for his classmates, his "symbols of hope," so they could "shine even brighter." His earnest intent ended up enraging his classmates, immediately demanding to Monokuma to cast their votes for him. However, they called of their request upon listening to the reluctant Mikan's testimony, pointing out that the true murder weapon wasn't the knife and that Nagito's clothes were completely clean of bloodstains, much to their dismay. When the suspicion started to fall on Teruteru instead, Nagito backed him up as a part of their agreement. He did so by allowing Hajime to identify Teruteru as the suspect, relishing the fair and square clash between Teruteru's version of hope and the hope the others believed in, all while reinforcing Teruteru's argument. However, the moment Teruteru couldn't refute the fact that he had murdered the Imposter from underneath the floorboards, Nagito felt disappointed that the Ultimate Cook had reached the limit of his hope, telling him to surrender. His refusal to further aid Teruteru caused the Ultimate Cook to lose his footing, especially once the group discovered he had hidden the true murder weapon, an iron skewer, inside a meat, sealing his fate and earning him the guilty verdict. Nagito then came clean about everything that had transpired, from sending the warning letter to the moment the Imposter threw their own life to protect him. He also explained his twisted beliefs and goals, which were barely comprehensible to his classmates. He viewed the deaths of the Imposter and Teruteru, following his execution, not as vain sacrifices but as splendid offerings that would strengthen everyone else's hope. Though he also stated that he felt as devastated as the others, everything that came out of his mouth sounded unhinged and even remorseless to his classmates. Consequently, they became distrustful of him, which was further exacerbated after he mentioned he would fully cooperate with anyone who wished to kill him, or in his words, to use him as their stepping stone. He could not care less of what they thought of him, though he was hurt to learn that Hajime now hated him as well. After the class trial, Nagito shared his view aloud on the talented and the talentless. Kazuichi and Nekomaru abruptly ended his monologue by knocking him out. The two proceeded to tie him up in the old building's dining hall to prevent him from harming the others while simultaneously forcing him to reflect on his wrongdoing. They decided to keep Nagito's confinement a secret, causing the likes of Hajime, Mahiru, and Peko, to wonder where he had gone off to, though none of them actively searched for him. Everyone eventually learned about Nagito's confinement from Nekomaru himself at the next morning gathering. He blurted out that he and Kazuichi had subdued who he believed as "the traitor" Monokuma was talking about. No one protested against their decision, only advising them to not neglect his well-being to prevent him from accidentally dying to starvation. Mahiru was the first to take the initiative to bring him breakfast, but grew fed up with his demand to change the meal to toast since he hated rice, and even attempted to manipulate her into playing the second motive, the Twilight Syndrome Murder Case. As a result, she transferred the responsibility of feeding him breakfast to Hajime. He was the same...as usual. Unlike his smile, his words carried a certain heaviness... As if a black poison was falling from his mouth every time he spoke, filling his surroundings with darkness... ...An illusion, but one I couldn't help feeling at that moment. Nagito had a huge smile on his face when he saw Hajime came to visit. He mentioned it would have been too embarrassing for him to ask a girl like Mahiru to feed him while he was chained, but was disappointed to hear that Hajime had no plans to comply with his request. Nagito startled him before he left, however, by revealing that he had learned about the second motive, something he had mixed feelings of as he loved the original series. Similar to what he did to Mahiru, Nagito tried to convince Hajime to play the game, but he refused, causing Nagito to whine about still needing him to feed him as Hajime left the area. After Mahiru was murdered, Monomi naively untied Nagito, hoping everyone could still cooperate even with someone like him. Nagito then cleared the Twilight Syndrome Murder Case's true ending and greeted Hajime and Chiaki when they arrived to do the same for the investigation. Despite his presence was unwanted by Hajime, he tricked Mikan, Ibuki, and Hiyoko, whom appeared in the game as characters, into gathering at the airport, so Hajime and Chiaki could have an easier time to interrogate them all at once. However, he was unable to get Fuyuhiko, another character from the game, who had locked himself in his cottage. The interrogation concluded with Hajime accusing Nagito of tempting Mahiru into playing the game. Nagito was offended to hear this and claimed that he was only giving the already considering Mahiru the final push. He then left the two, now by choice, to sneak into everyone's cottages and collect footprint samples, something he could have only done by requesting Monokuma's help. This led him to learn that the footprints left on the beach home were Hiyoko's, which he tested when she was at the airport. He also noticed that Hiyoko hoarded a particular brand of gummy, and he collected a bag of them, thinking he might use it as evidence later. Nagito's effort to carry the gummy bag with him helped Hiyoko to prove her innocence during the class trial, as it contained no lemon-flavored gummy that the culprit planted at the crime scene to frame her. The culprit turned out to be Peko, though she claimed she was merely a "tool" devoid of any motive or intent, and only carried out the order of Fuyuhiko, her young master and the true culprit. Nagito had suspected this earlier, questioning Monokuma about whether the culprit was counted to trigger the Body Discovery Announcement after the first three people who discovered the body, which they were not. From this, he deduced that since the BDA was triggered after Hiyoko and Kazuichi discovered the body, and discounting Peko, the only missing one was Fuyuhiko. Nagito saw through Peko by pointing out that her self-proclaimed identity of a tool with no agency clashed with her enacting the murder on her own free will to protect Fuyuhiko, "her hope." True to his deduction, Fuyuhiko himself never saw Peko as his tool, thus validating the group's vote. Consequently, Peko was dragged into her execution, causing Fuyuhiko, who tried to interfere, to lose his right eye in the process. Nagito regarded this outcome as hopeless, and was saddened as he believed it could be altered if only Peko negotiated to murder him instead. He was also furious to the point of promising to obliterate Monokuma. Yet, despite everything, he remained optimistic, believing that this was just another stepping stone toward a better, brighter future for his classmates. The following morning, Nagito was no longer chained and casually rejoined the group's regular breakfast meeting at the restaurant, though he arrived a little late. He immediately dampened the mood by deeming Hiyoko's ominous memorial for Mahiru as a hopeless object, just after their classmates had praised her effort. He later ventured to the newly accessible third island, where he would watch The Wizard of Monomi 2.5D in the movie theater he found to be hopelessly boring. He was then invited by Sonia to visit Fuyuhiko at the hospital, which he cordially turned down, fearing his presence would only ruin the moment. Nonetheless, he showed up at Fuyuhiko's recovery party hosted by Ibuki a few days later and felt honored. Not wanting to appear rude, he chose to wait outside the music venue until everyone else had gathered, though he later grumbled when Ibuki was about to play her second song, clearly not entirely pleased with her performance. The party was abruptly interrupted when Monomi informed them that Akane was dueling Monokuma, prompting everyone to rush to the scene, which was the first island beach. Unlike the other two patients, Nagito suffered the most from the fever and had an unpredictable condition, such as difficulty breathing. Despite his grave condition, he was able to notice that Mikan, having put extra effort into nursing him, had caught the Despair Disease as well, catching glimpses of her expressions as being so "full of despair, a despair so devoid of hope that not even a single fragment remained." She continued to devote herself to caring for Nagito on the second day, when she estimated that he might slip into a critical condition that day. Mikan's effort helped stabilized his condition the next morning when Hajime came to visit him. Once they were left alone after Mikan excused herself to rest on the on-call room, Nagito, whose Liar Disease persisted, stated he stating that he did not want to see his face, a request Hajime obliged since he still needed to wait for the morning transmission from the motel group in the lobby. That transmission led Hajime and the others to discover Ibuki and Hiyoko's bodies at the music venue. Since class trials were mandatory for everyone alive, Nagito and Akane were instantly cured by Monokuma and were brought to the crime scene. From the beginning of the investigation, Nagito immediately suspected Mikan, as he had suspected her of having caught the Despair Disease. Unlike the previous two murders, he expressed that he could not forgive this crime because of its nature, being committed in the name of despair. This suspicion allowed him to quickly deduce that the rope used to kill Ibuki had been employed for strangulation rather than hanging, as indicated by fraying at its center. This evidence later contributed to proving during the class trial that Mikan had intentionally falsified her autopsy report. He also asked Akane to check inside Hiyoko's disheveled kimono, where she found her motel room key hidden deep within. From this, Nagito concluded that the culprit likely had not tampered with it. To enhance his understanding of the murder, he wished to hear from Hajime himself about the moment he received this morning's transmission up to the body's discovery. Hajime refused to tell him anything, fearing Nagito might use the information against the Spotless later in the class trial. As a result, Kazuichi began to suspect Hajime, who protested against the accusation. Before the tension could escalate further, Monomi appeared and announced that she had defeated the Monobeast guarding the fourth island. Monokuma soon followed, attempting to persuade the reluctant students to explore the new island by enticing them with several incentives, including information related to the Future Foundation which Nagito was eager to obtain. He later joined his classmates in riding the roller coaster to receive a prize from Monokuma, which turned out to be a file about the Killing School Life that only further their confusion surrounding their circumstances. Nagito complied with Hajime's wish to obtain his school profile and learn his Ultimate talent by joining him and the others in boarding the train to the Funhouse. However, they were gassed into sleep during the journey and later awoke inside the Funhouse's Strawberry House. Monokuma then subjected them to an escape game in which no one could leave the Funhouse unless a murder occurred. Nagito followed his classmates' unyielding attitude by exploring the Funhouse in teams. He invited Chiaki to pair up with him, as the two rarely spent time together. They were also joined by Kazuichi, who was paranoid of Hajime thanks to Nagito's earlier accusation that he might be the traitor. Later, Nagito and the others traveled to the second building, Grape House, using the contact elevator at Monokuma's behest. There, the animatronic bear revealed that he would no longer provide food or drinks, using their hunger as a time limit until a murder occurred. After encouraging everyone not to lose hope, Nagito and the others explored Grape House with the same pairings. Mid-exploration, Nagito, who inspected the Monokuma Archive, noticed Chiaki had separated herself to join Hajime's group instead, prompting him and Kazuichi, and later the others, to gather at the Grape Tower where she had been. When the nighttime fell, Nagito, being the Ultimate Lucky Student, secured a Deluxe Room through a rock-paper-scissors game determining the room assignment. On the third day of their confinement, Nagito and his classmates were forced to begin attending Monokuma Tai Chi sessions in the morning, intended to exhaust and starve the already low-energy students. The group was then forced to confront their two only options: either wait and die of starvation, or wait for someone to kill. Nagito himself stated that he simply wanted to do whatever his classmates decided. On the morning of the fourth day, Nagito slept through the rumbling noise of Nekomaru's fall at 7:30 a.m., thanks to his soundproofed Deluxe Room, and missed the Monokuma Tai Chi session, which was supposed to be held at 7:00 a.m. Later, at 9:00 a.m.—though the clocks in both lounges displayed 7:00 a.m., having been secretly tampered with by the culprit—Nagito, Fuyuhiko, Gundham, and Kazuichi attempted to use the elevator to reach Grape Tower for Monokuma Tai Chi, believing they had gone on time. However, they discovered that the elevator was broken, along with Strawberry Hall door button, leaving them completely cut off from the other house. They then learned from Fuyuhiko, who had used the lounge telephone to contact Grape Tower, that the earlier body discovery announcement they had heard was for Nekomaru. Nagito, as per usual, was eager to properly solve the mystery during the investigation in order to take either his classmates or the killer's sides where "true hope" lay. He started by arranging the sequence of events by hearing the Strawberry House residents' testimony. Their testimonies immediately singled him out as the odd one for having slept through the rumbling sound and the ringing of the lounge alarm. He then suspected that the alarm clocks in both towers had been tampered with and asked Fuyuhiko to check on his behalf. He did so knowing he wouldn't have time himself, as he had already resolved to challenge the Final Dead Room's Life-Threatening Game himself, not wanting to risk anyone else's safety plus to obtain more clues. Before setting off, he handed Kazuichi a multi-tool he had secretly been carrying since before entering the fourth island to help speed up the elevator repairs. In exchange, he asked Kazuichi to use the compass attached to the tool to observe how it reacted to the elevator's movement once it was fixed, hoping to gain a better understanding of the Funhouse's structure. In the Final Dead Room, Nagito utilized his deduction skills and what little assistance there was by the trapped Monomi to solve all the series of puzzles. However, to complete the game, he was required to play Russian Roulette. Placing his faith in his title as the Ultimate Lucky Student, Nagito increased the difficulty by loading five of the six chambers before pulling the trigger against his head. He survived, earning access to the Octagon. As an additional award for clearing the game in the highest difficulty, Monokuma rewarded him with the extension of the Future Foundation file the group received after riding the roller coaster, and the student profiles of his class.
