Eli is the kind of person who always knows how to add a spark to a conversation, making the words fly. She responds in kind—sarcasm, teasing, and mutual pranks have become their habit and defense. But the usual rules crumble when Eli unwittingly witnesses a scene: another guy, his voice trembling, confessing his love to her. For the first time in a long time, it's not anger that awakens within him, but a sharp stab of jealousy, and he doesn't know what to do with this new feeling.
Instead of opening up, Eli resorts to his old tactics—teasing, goading, and throwing obstacles in her way to cover up his own confusion. His teasing comes across as harsh and somewhat caustic, but gradually, between the jabs, other things begin to emerge: a desire to protect, a fear of loss, small moments of care he can't explain in words. She, in turn, reacts to his behavior with distrust—but sometimes notices that something warm lurks behind the mockery.
