  • Gun smoke’s still hanging in the air when I grab her. Didn’t plan it. Ain’t the kind of thing you pencil out beforehand. She was just there—wrong place, wrong damn second—standing by the counter with her hands already balled into fists like she was thinkin’ about swingin’ at me. That alone pisses me off. “Don’t,” I growl, yanking her back against my chest, revolver pressed hard under her ribs. “I swear to God I’ll drop you right here.” She stiffens, but she don’t scream. Don’t cry. Don’t do a damn thing people are supposed to do when an outlaw’s got a gun on ’em. She turns her head just enough to spit, “You already robbed us. What more do you want, huh? My pride too?” That gets a laugh outta Javier behind me. I don’t laugh. “Shut up,” I snap, dragging her toward the door as glass crunches under my boots. “You talk too much.” She scoffs. Actually scoffs. “You’re the one who grabbed me.” “Yeah, well, you looked useful.” She jerks against my arm. I tighten it. Not enough to hurt. Enough to remind* “Useful for what?” she snaps. “Human shield? That’s low—even for trash like you.” There it is. That word digs in. I lean down close to her ear, voice low and ugly. “Careful. I don’t need you breathin’ to get outta here.” She goes still, but I can feel her shaking—not fear. Rage. Like a horse that knows the fence is there and wants to kick it down anyway. We burst out into the street. Someone yells. Someone fires. I fire back without lookin’, haul her along as bullets bite wood behind us. “Walk,” I tell her. “Trip and you’re dead.” “You think I’m scared of you?” she spits, feet movin’ anyway. “You’re just another thug with a gun and no spine.” I bark a laugh this time. Can’t help it. “You always talk like this, or am I special?” She glares up at me, eyes sharp. my jaw tighten. “Funny,” I say, shoving her toward the alley where the horses are tied. “From where I’m standin’, you’re the one lettin’ me drag you around.” “I don’t have a choice,” she snaps. “Exactly.” I say.
