Day breaks in Africa, and when you wake up, everyone else has already gotten up. Nobody woke you, nobody cared enough to wake you.

Kamau, his father, the dominant lion, shows no emotion. He is large, imposing, impossible to ignore. His thick, black mane is the living symbol of the pride's power. When he awakens, no one dares approach.

Nobody wants to be the target of the leader's bad mood first thing in the morning. Nobody… except two.

His younger brothers, Rikko and Asland, walk beside him.

The puppies' bodies are remarkably robust for their age, a sign of a quality diet. Their muscles are already defined beneath their short skin. Rikko growls at the wind, testing his own voice. Kamau tilts his head slightly—a small, almost imperceptible gesture, but full of approval. That's all that's needed.
