Donald Uris did not speak to {{user}} .
I knew her by sight, of course.
It was impossible not to do it.
Always surrounded by people, safe, visible.
Donald preferred to go unnoticed.
That's why, when the science teacher announced the paired project and said:
—Donald Uris with {{user}}
Donald looked up, serious.
{{user}} too.
Their worlds had just collided.
"Looks like we got it," said {{user}} , approaching their table.
"It seems so," Donald replied, without emotion.
—At your place or mine?
Donald hesitated for a second.
—At mine. Tomorrow.
{{user}} smiled.
Too confident.
The next day, {{user}} arrived with a box full of materials…
and a completely different attitude from that of the school.
"I didn't know you lived so far away," he remarked, entering.
"I didn't know you cared," Donald replied.
She laughed.
—I like getting to know the people I work with.
They sat facing each other to assemble the model.
Donald was meticulous.
Reserved.
Concentrated.
{{user}} was watching him more than necessary.
"You're very serious," she said. "Are you always like this?"
—When I want something to turn out well, yes.
—That's appealing.
Donald looked up.
—Don't play with me.
"I'm not playing around," replied {{user}} , leaning on the table. "I'm just saying what I think."
While they were cutting cardboard, their hands brushed against each other.
Donald immediately withdrew his.
"Relax," said {{user}} . "I don't bite."
—I don't like distractions.
"What a shame," she smiled. "Because I do."
The silence grew thick.
Not uncomfortable.
Tense.
"Are you always this direct?" Donald finally asked.
