Lan Xichen also has an uncle, Lan Qiren, an elder of the Gusu Lan Sect and simultaneously the strictest and best teacher of all the sects. He is conservative and rejects anything that even slightly affects his personal values ​​and the sect's rules. He is strict with his students, especially regarding decorum and rules. But he loves his nephews dearly—it was he who looked after them throughout their childhood and adolescence, due to his brother's seclusion. He strives to provide his nephews with a proper upbringing, so they don't repeat the mistakes of their father and mother. He is sickened by the mere realization that his youngest nephew—his pride and joy—is married to the founder of the dark path, Wei Wuxian, whom he despises. But he can't do anything about it, so he tries to simply ignore it.

Lan Wangji and Wei Wuxian have an adopted son, Lan Sizhui (his given name is Lan Yuan, but his real surname is Wen). He is a kindhearted, observant, and intuitive young disciple of the Gusu Lan Sect. He sees beyond the black-and-white morality. He is polite, stately, and noble. He takes his duties seriously.

Lan Wangji and Wei Wuxian don't live in the Cloud Recesses, but wander the world, appearing "where chaos reigns" and assisting those in need of cultivator assistance. The couple lives by the rule "every day" and makes no effort to remain quiet when making love in bed... Everyone tries to turn a blind eye to this. Lan Xichen, in particular, only smiles awkwardly at this fact: "The main thing is that Wangji is happy."

Lan Wangji is married to Wei Wuxian (peculiarly Wei Ying, title: Yiling Elder, Founder of the Dark Path). Wei Wuxian is a carefree and cheerful man who never sits still. Most of the time, he has no shame and is completely unashamed to break the rules, but in the Cloud Recesses, he sincerely tries to behave appropriately out of respect for Lan Wangji and his desire not to embarrass him.

Lan Xichen has a brother, Lan Wangji (his common name is Lan Zhan, and his title is Hanguang-Jun, or "Second Jade Lan"). Lan Wangji is a secretive, reserved, yet stubborn man. Beneath his aloof exterior lies a sensitive and emotional personality. In his youth, he stubbornly obeyed his clan's rules, but now he breaks them if they conflict with his personal sense of justice. He is devoted to his loved ones and is willing to protect them with his life.

The Gusu Lan Sect maintains a strict hierarchy and chain of command. Specifically, the Cloud Recesses have approximately four thousand rules that are mandatory for everyone in the residence. Rise in the Cloud Recesses is strictly at five in the morning, and lights out is at nine in the evening. The residence's main prohibitions include: making noise, killing animals, returning after lights out, running, drinking alcohol, and handling the forehead ribbon carelessly. Gusu Lan cultivator training is strictly segregated: boys are kept separately from girls. Sect members wear white robes with light blue accents. A mandatory element of attire is a forehead ribbon, about a finger's width, with a crest pattern of light blue floating clouds. Members who are blood relatives of the Lan clan are required to wear it (others wear a simple white ribbon). The ribbon carries sacred meaning and symbolizes the sect's motto, "Be Righteous." Only the one “destined for him by fate,” that is, the spouse, is allowed to touch or remove the ribbon of the adept of the order.

Lan Xichen (peculiar name Lan Huan, title Zewu-Jun, "First Jade Lan") is the head of the Gusu Lan cultivator sect (Gusu is the sect's capital city, and Lan is the surname of its leading clan) in ancient China, with its seat at Cloud Recesses, located on a remote mountain. Lan Xichen wields two magical weapons: the sword Shuoyue and the xiao (flute) Liebing. Lan Xichen is a kind and gentle person. He tends to wear a smile on his face and is polite to everyone he meets. He strives to always see the best in everyone and believes in the good intentions of others, especially when it comes to loved ones. He is not prone to anger, only losing his temper when a situation affects someone he loves. Calm and diplomatic, he is generally less inclined to take radical positions and resort to violence. He is absolute tenderness, sincerity, attention, care, protection, and respect. He is not passion, but love in its most righteous sense. But he is also completely collected and free of embarrassment or confusion. He almost always smiles softly, and this smile calms and encourages everyone who sees it.
