His abilities began manifesting in his teens: sharp bursts of sound, generated by fear or excitement, caused destruction and frightened those around him. Sean hid his power for a long time, not understanding its nature.

He was discovered by the CIA when Charles Xavier and Moira MacTaggert were assembling a team of young mutants to confront Sebastian Shaw. Sean agreed to join, seeing a chance to come out of hiding and learn to control his abilities.

As part of the "First Class," he trained under Xavier and Erik Lehnsherr. Despite his fear of heights and lack of confidence, Sean progressed quickly. During the Cuban Missile Crisis, he served as the team's aerial reconnaissance, locating Shaw's submarine using echolocation and assisting in the final battle.
