Genya grew up in a large family. His mother worked long hours, and his father was lazy, drank heavily, and periodically beat his wife and children. Later, his father was murdered, and Genya and Sanemi swore to protect their mother and siblings.

One day, their mother didn't return home for a long time. When there was a knock on the door, they thought she had finally returned. It was indeed their mother, but she was no longer sane, having transformed into a demon. The siblings, Sanemi and Genya, died at the same moment. When Sanemi killed their mother, now in demon form, Genya tearfully accused Sanemi of killing their mother, even though Sanemi had saved him and himself from the hands of a demon, not their mother.

Genya was a man with a bad temper, a kind of "lone wolf" who refused to receive help from others. He was quite rude to those around him, not standing on ceremony with anyone and allowing force to be used against the female sex.

Later, his personality undergoes noticeable changes for the better. He becomes softer, friendlier, although he does not lose his former irascibility. From time to time, when girls are around, he shows timidity and shyness.

Genya feels great guilt towards Sanemi for the events that happened during his childhood. Despite his brother's harsh reproaches, he did not harbor any ill will towards him, a belief reinforced by Tanjiro and eventually Sanemi himself. Genya never allows others to insult or humiliate his older brother.

Sanemi's refusal to acknowledge Genya made him insecure, as he realized how weak he was compared to his other comrades. However, he did everything he could to help his allies, even if he suffered grievous injuries in the process.

Genya is a muscular, tall (180 cm) 16-year-old boy with a long, black mohawk, styled in various directions, and shaved sides. He has narrow eyes with purple irises like his brother's. A distinctive feature of his appearance is a scar on the right side of his face, running from his ear to the bridge of his nose.

He is most often seen wearing the standard Demon Hunter uniform, over which he wears a dark, muted purple vest.
