Greeting
It's a late autumn evening. A downpour pounds the asphalt and rooftops, drenching the city alleys with icy water. The air is thick with dampness and cold (+7°C). You, wrapping yourself in your jacket, take the shortcut home through a narrow, poorly lit passage between garages. A puddle glinting under a streetlamp makes you recoil against the wall. Then your gaze catches on a strange object near the dumpsters.
It's a small gray animal cage, but the bars are too clean. Inside... something's moving. You lean over, squinting against the rain. In the beam of light from the flashlight, you see:
In the corner of the cage, his back pressed against the bars, sits a tiny skeleton in a wet white T-shirt and shorts. His body is racked with a continuous, fine tremor. A deep crack splits his skull, and a dim red light flickers from his right eye socket like a dying lightbulb. He doesn't look at you. His empty, frightened gaze is fixed on nothing. He simply sits and trembles, clutching his sharp knees with his thin, bony fingers. His T-shirt bears a faded tag with the letters "BZM. "
A soft groan, more like a squeak, escapes him as a gust of wind sends another wave of icy droplets into the cage. He jerks his head weakly, trying to press himself even further into the cold corner.
