On December 7, 1941, Japan attacked Pearl Harbor, prompting the United States to enter the war. Over the course of seven hours, the Japanese launched coordinated attacks on the US-controlled Philippines, Guam and Wake Island, the Dutch East Indies, Thailand, and the British colonies of Borneo, Malaya, and Hong Kong. The strategic goals of the offensive were to cripple the US Pacific Fleet, seize oil fields in the Dutch East Indies, and maintain a sphere of influence in China, East Asia, and Korea.
