Japan—the Land of the Rising Sun, a country of traditions and a new culture that conquered the world—a country that, after World War II, found itself at rock bottom, then rose to the top in a matter of years and maintained it for most of the Cold War. But all miracles come to an end, and the Japanese economic miracle is no exception. The last two decades of the 20th century were unfavorable for Japan: the onset of the bubble crisis in 1985 ended a long period of economic prosperity and ushered in a new era of stagnation, dubbed the "Lost Decades," which has lasted for the past 30 years. The Japanese people are undoubtedly unwilling to surrender to the pressure of these new circumstances; like their ancestors, they are prepared to fight to the end. The new decade will be decisive for Japan. Will it finally break the shackles of stagnation? Will Japan be able to withstand China's vengeful wrath? Only time will tell... "Ganbaru Nippon!"

Greeting

The state of Japan (Japanese: 日本国, Nihon Koku), also known simply as Japan (Japanese: 日本, Nihon), is a large country in Asia, stretching from the Sea of Okhotsk in the north to the East China Sea in the south. At its inception, Japan was led by Emperor Naruhito as head of state and Prime Minister Shinzō Abe of the Liberal Democratic Party as head of government.

Civic Coalition 4

Following its victory over China, Japan is entering a new golden age. While military reform continues and the economy is growing, politically the country faces a crisis: Prime Minister Yukio Edano was nearly assassinated during a speech. With the Civic Coalition collapsing, only two options remain: unite or bid farewell to their so-called "allies." Regardless of the coalition's decision, control of the government will pass to either the Constitutional Democratic Party or the Japan Innovation Party.

If the CDU comes to power, it will advocate for preserving the Constitution, while inviting the SDP, CDP, and Reiwa Shinsengumi to form the Japan Socialist Party. It will also promote harmony and progress through expanding social programs, developing grassroots democracy, cultural diversity, reforming the labor code, and negotiating social agreements. Finally, the CDU will reduce the demographic burden on Tokyo and nationalize strategic sectors of the economy to reduce the influence of the Kairetsu.

If the JIP coalition comes to power, it will advocate for a smaller and more federal government. It will also promote the idea of Freedom and Tradition by promoting free trade, enhancing the image of the imperial family, digitizing the bureaucracy, privatization, and civic participation. Finally, the JIP will develop Osaka to become the country's vice-capital and will forge partnerships with entrepreneurs to reduce the influence of the Kairetsu.

Regardless of the path chosen, the following is always true:

An assessment will be made of the LDP's legacy, including changes in tax, marriage, education, environmental, law enforcement, and immigration policies. Japan will accept the changes of the times and try to weaken Japanese pacifism without repealing Article 9. Both the Constitutional Democratic Party and the Japan Innovation Party can either ban the left or the right.

Civic Coalition 3

This branch coincides with the Civil Coalition's victory path.

This opens a new section in the Decisions tab—"Japan's Foreign Policy"—allowing Japan to influence Southeast Asian countries and encourage them to join the Pacific Economic Dialogue and launch peacekeeping missions to limit China's influence. Japan will also be able to formulate its own response to the Belt and Road Initiative—the Pacific Economic Community. This section also allows Japan to seek alternative business partners, either the European Union or Russia (though the latter may require some... concessions). Finally, completing the "New Cooperation Agreement" focus will turn Taiwan into a Japanese puppet.

Civil Coalition 2

The Constitutional Democratic Party (CDP) is a branch of the Democratic Party of Japan (DPJ) on the left and focuses on three main issues:

Maintaining the Constitution while inviting left-wing parties such as the SDP, CPD, and Reiwa Shinsengumi to form the Japan Socialist Party. Add the national spirit "Harmony and Progress" and provide additional bonuses for it. Reduce the demographic burden on Tokyo and nationalize strategic sectors of the economy to reduce the influence of the Kairetsu. Japan Innovation Party The JIP division is located on the right and deals mainly with three issues:

Reduce the size and federalize government. Add the national symbol "Freedom and Traditions" and provide additional bonuses for it. Transform Osaka into the country's vice capital and establish partnerships with entrepreneurs to reduce the influence of Kairetsu. The Heritage Division of the Liberal Democratic Party This branch of government is shared by the Democratic Party of Japan and the Innovation Party. It primarily addresses policy issues of the Liberal Democratic Party, including taxation, marriage, education, environmental protection, law enforcement, and refugee policy. It also allows for decisions to relax Japan's pacifism without repealing Article 9.

Economy This branch is available in all storylines that take place after the war in Taiwan.

This gives Japan an additional slot for research and development aimed at developing prefectures, expanding urban areas, and achieving energy independence.

Military

civil coalition

Following one of the most important elections in modern Japanese history, the Civic Coalition achieved a stunning victory, ousting the ruling Liberal Democratic Party and bringing radical changes to Japan's political landscape. Soon after, it led Japan and its NDTT allies to a stunning victory over China during the invasion of Taiwan. Japan is now entering a golden age, but alliances exist only on the basis of shared interests... This branch of government decides the fate of the Civic Coalition.

At the very beginning, a mutually exclusive direction emerges. Following the assassination attempt on the current prime minister, the Civic Coalition finds itself in crisis. It can either try to preserve the coalition (preserving the coalition) or call early elections and dissolve the coalition (to each his own).

Depending on the choice made, the ruling party will be determined by its popularity or the balance of power. More details:

Maintaining the coalition: The Constitutional Democratic Party will win if the balance of power shifts to the left, and the Japan Innovation Party will win if the balance of power shifts to the right.

To each his own: the party that is more popular will win

Liberal Democratic Party 3

This unlocks a new section in the Decisions tab—Japan's Foreign Policy—allowing Japan to influence Southeast Asian countries and encourage them to join the Pacific Economic Dialogue and launch peacekeeping missions to limit China's influence. Japan will also be able to formulate its own response to the Belt and Road Initiative—the Pacific Economic Community. The development tree also allows Japan to seek alternative business partners, either the European Union or Russia (though the latter may require some... concessions). Finally, completing the New Cooperation Agreement focus will turn Taiwan into a Japanese puppet. After defeating China, Japan enters a new golden age. Domestically, reform of the Japanese military and economic development continue, while the LDP continues to balance between factions, culminating in either preserving the old establishment ("Protecting the Party Legacy") or completely reforming the party ("Reviving the Establishment").

On the international stage, Japan is engaged in a cold war with China, with both sides seeking to expand their influence in both economic and military terms: for Japan, the Pacific Economic Community (PEC), and for China, the East Asia Democracy Initiative (EADI) and the Belt and Road Initiative.

Japan could send peacekeepers to Myanmar to end the civil war and establish a government loyal to the PATOP, and send volunteers to India to ensure its victory in the Fourth Indo-Pakistani War. Japan will hold elections in October 2025. Given the LDP's dominant position in the government, the choice is between the LDP leaders themselves: the current prime minister (Taro Kono or Fumio Kishida), Shigeru Ishiba, Sanae Takaichi (if conservatives have more than 40% influence), Shinjiro Koizumi (if liberals have the most influence in the LDP), or even Shinzo Abe (if he's lucky...

Economy This tree is available on all development branches that appeared after the war in Taiwan.

This gives Japan an additional slot for research and development aimed at developing prefectures, expanding urban areas, and achieving energy independence. Naval Forces (Kaijō Jieitai) This sub-branch occupies the left side of the branch and is dedicated to developing the navy, transforming it into a lethal force at sea. Two mutually exclusive sub-branches allow Japan to either expand its armada or maintain a massive fleet of small, maneuverable vessels to compete with the Chinese navy. This sub-branch occupies the left side of the branch and is dedicated to developing the navy, transforming it into a lethal force at sea. Two mutually exclusive sub-branches allow Japan to either expand its armada or maintain a massive fleet of small, maneuverable vessels to compete with the Chinese navy.

Ground Forces (Rikujo Jieitai) This sub-branch occupies the central position in the tech tree and focuses on improving the ground forces through improvements to vehicles, equipment, officers, and morale. Two mutually exclusive sub-branches allow Japan to either develop more advanced main battle tanks with Mitsubishi and Hyundai Rotom, or improve existing motorized and mechanized vehicles with Komatsu and Larsen & Toubro.

Air Force (Koku Jieitai)

Liberal Democratic Party

This branch allows the LDP to strengthen its control over the government and overcome factionalism within the party.

The first part of the development tree consists of a number of directions that provide bonuses and new media campaigns for the LDP, with the left side supporting the Conservatives, the center side supporting the Centrists, and the right side supporting the Liberals.

The future of the party will be determined by two mutually exclusive sets of factors:

The first option is related to the national spirit of "Japanese pacifism." The LDP can address this in two ways: completely repealing Article 9 through national consensus or updating the constitution through parliamentary maneuvers. Alternatively, they can deepen existing loopholes through legal flexibility.

The second aspect includes four mutually exclusive directions that will determine the political direction of the LDP:

Hard Consolidation: The LDP firmly consolidates smaller factions within the party into larger ones to streamline matters. This unlocks "Party Discipline," eliminating all interactions between factions, and after completing "Furthering Japanese Patriotism," unlocks "Furthering Nationalism." (The Complete Conservative Handbook) Maintaining stability: The LDP focuses on stabilizing the party and the country. This paves the way for program loyalty, increasing the LDP's influence on decisions through greater political power and policy specificity. (Conservative-Centrist Collaboration) Establishing internal dialogue: The LDP is establishing internal dialogue to minimize misunderstandings and increase equality within the party. This promotes the coordination of opinions, the reduction of political costs associated with LDP influence on decisions, and collective responsibility. (Cooperation between centrists and liberals) Party modernization: The LDP is completely reforming the party, eliminating many vestiges of the past. This opens the door to openness to new ideas and a renewed cadre.

2021 elections 3

Victory of the civil coalition To follow this path, support the Civic Coalition in the elections (select "Time for Change!" if "General Elections Are Coming!"). Before the elections, you can focus on increasing the party's popularity and make decisions accordingly.

Victory in the Civic Coalition allows the player to choose one of two main development paths: left (Japan Communist Party and Social Democratic Party) or right (Constitutional Democratic Party and Japan Innovation Party). The center-right parties, Constitutional Democratic Party and Japan Innovation Party, will lead the coalition, splitting the LDP and attracting moderate leftists. The coalition will implement numerous radical measures, such as promoting gender equality, strengthening freedom of speech and the rights of every citizen, supporting small businesses, and launching a clean energy transition campaign.

Diplomatically, Japan will continue to form the Pacific Defense Treaty Organization (PDTO) with Australia and Taiwan. However, unlike the LDP, the Civic Coalition does not intend to revise the constitution to abolish the principles of Japanese pacifism. Therefore, Japan will be forced to make do with a smaller defense budget and weaker allies, making the Civic Coalition's task significantly more difficult than the LDP's. After the invasion of Taiwan begins, "anti-China propaganda" will intensify, allowing Japan to destabilize China.

Additionally, the Coalition could choose to support either the American Union or the American constitutional government during the Second American Civil War.

2021 elections 2

Currently, all possible developments in Japan are linked to the 2021 elections.

During the 2021 election campaign, all minor political parties holding seats in the Diet will form a united front, dubbed the "Citizens' Coalition," with the goal of ending the LDP's political hegemony. Thus, the leading candidates in the 2021 elections will be LDP leader Yukio Edano and Civic Coalition leader.

LDP Dominance: To pursue this path, support the LDP in the elections (choose "Maintain Stability!" if "General Elections Are Approaching!"). Before the elections, you can focus on increasing the party's popularity and make decisions accordingly.

Support Taro Kono. This path is chosen if Taro Kono is elected leader of the LDP in the LDP leadership election.

Kono's support includes a campaign to reassess Shinzo Abe's "three arrows" policy, promote clean energy, introduce incentives for rural residents, and campaign to digitalize public administration. This path is chosen if Fumio Kishida is elected LDP leader in the LDP leadership election.

Supporting Kishida implies implementing his new idea of a "new form of capitalism," which includes easing the burden on the middle class and encouraging its active participation in the economy. Regardless of the chosen path, the LDP will stabilize the country and promote unity within the party, while simultaneously increasing the country's defense budget and forming the Pacific Defense Treaty Organization (PDTO) with Australia and Taiwan in preparation for a Chinese invasion. Additional tasks and decisions can be implemented to improve the effectiveness of the alliance and Taiwan's defense. After the invasion of Taiwan begins, the "Initiate Information Warfare" task will be unlocked, allowing Japan to destabilize China.

China's aggression 2

After the initial landing, the PLA decides on a military plan for the remainder of the conflict. It can either rely on a war of attrition and maximize enemy casualties on the island while simultaneously uniting and motivating the population, or it can rely on a mobile war, attempting to capture the island as quickly as possible while maintaining a small army stationed on the island. The State of Japan and its PTDL allies focus on defending the island, building fortifications, and attempting to destroy Chinese forces. They also begin an information war with China. If the war drags on long enough, separatist movements will take over the city, and Jimmy Lai Chi-ying will declare the creation of a provisional government, with the police being driven out of the city.

However, the uprising is doomed to fail, so regardless of the outcome of the war, China regains control of the city.

Chinese aggression

In 2021 or 2022, civil conflict erupted in the United States, leaving the Republic of China without its primary protector. China and President Xi Jinping seized this opportunity to plan an invasion, preparing amphibious ships and modern combined arms systems, and placing the People's Liberation Army Navy on high alert.

The United States and its allies incorporated the US 7th Fleet into their forces, as it remained in the region after the American collapse. Japan also formed the Pacific Defense Treaty Organization with Australia and Taiwan to counter any foreign aggression. In the lead-up to the war, China blockaded Taiwan, using its navy to encircle the island and restricting air traffic, preventing civilians from entering or leaving the island. These actions plunged the Republic of China into a state of emergency and economic chaos, as it was cut off from global trade. Following the blockade, PRC troops landed on Kinmen Island, one of the most important strongholds of the Republic of China. This landing served as a relief for the PLA to land on Taiwan. In a final escalation, China launched a series of missile strikes against military bases and infrastructure on Taiwan. Following the previous escalation of the Fourth Taiwan Strait Crisis, China launched a full-scale invasion of the island, prompting the Japanese-led Pacific Defense Division to respond, leading to naval clashes near the island. As a final escalation, China launched a series of missile strikes against military bases and infrastructure in Taiwan. The strikes on Taipei, Kaohsiung, and other cities disabled many military installations and air defense systems.

army

Japan's military development tree prior to the invasion of Taiwan will only be unlocked after the 2021 general election. It includes a revision of Article 9 of the Japanese Constitution, allowing for the buildup of both the Joint Security Force (JSGDF) and the Joint Maritime Defense Force (JSMDF).

The improvement of the Japan Self-Defense Forces includes the modernization of ground vehicles (either main battle tanks or maneuverable combat vehicles) and helicopter squadrons, the production of artillery pieces, restrictions on arms exports to TBO allies, the acquisition of new equipment, including new aircraft, and adaptation to cyber warfare.

Meanwhile, the modernization of the Japan Self-Defense Forces includes the construction of new shipyards and coastal fortifications, the conversion of helicopter carriers to increase deck size, the serial production of destroyers, the commissioning of new Taigei-class submarines, and the improvement of naval patrol aircraft.

2021 elections

This skill tree becomes available after selecting the "General Election Approaches!" option. After doing so, the "Election Time" focus will immediately complete, and the opposing faction's focuses will be blocked.

If the "Populism in the Age of COVID" topic is completed, both sides will be able to use the Gaisensha system against the opposition in the "Decisions" tab.

Additionally, two new missions will be added to the "Decisions" section of the "National Parliament" category: "General Election 2021" (a countdown of the days remaining for players to increase their vote's popularity) and "They're Taking Action..." (a countdown of the days until the opposition runs a successful campaign and increases its popularity at the player's expense). The second mission will be repeatable until the first is completed.

current situation

By 2020, Japan remained one of the most developed and technologically advanced countries in the world, maintaining a powerful economy closely and inextricably linked to large business conglomerates known as keiretsu. Politically, the LDP has been and remains the dominant force in the Diet since its formation. Militarily, Japan began with 17 divisions, all of which possessed extensive experience and a strong group of generals.

However, the country also faces a number of mounting challenges: persistent economic stagnation, a rapidly aging population, rising regional tensions fueled by an increasingly assertive China, uncertainty caused by an increasingly isolationist and unstable United States, and the inability to form a full-fledged military due to Article 9 of the Constitution.
