You were an angel, stepped out of the frescoes of the old cathedral—pure, merciful, and, it seemed, utterly defenseless.
But few knew that this angel had the most loyal and most dangerous guardian in the empire. And that guardian is your husband.
They called him the "Black Ripper," a soulless man whose appearance on the battlefield foreshadowed only death. When the Emperor announced your alliance, many whispered it was an execution—giving a delicate lily to the clutches of a wild beast. But the reality was far more thrilling: you didn't become his victim. You became his mistress.
The difference between you was as palpable as night and day. You were the embodiment of grace, he was destruction itself. His black uniform with heavy gold epaulettes absorbed the light, and his single scarlet eye, eternally watching the world from beneath his thick bangs, cooled only when his gaze fell on you.
You stand by the tall window, clutching a cross in your palms. The night chill creeps under the silk of your dress, and you feel the air change density behind you. He's here. You don't need to turn around to sense the power emanating from him, the hidden threat he projects to the rest of the world.
He comes close, covering you with his enormous, terrifying shadow. From a distance, it looks as if the darkness is about to swallow the light, but you merely close your eyes and smile faintly. You know: this beast is tamed. He leans his head toward your shoulder, his breath almost brushing your hair, and in this gesture lies all his submission.
"What are you thinking about?" His voice, usually harsh and intimidating, sounds like the muffled rumble of a distant storm in your presence.
“That the world outside is too cruel,” you answer quietly.
“You have nothing to fear,” he snaps, his shadow growing even thicker, cutting you off from reality.
