Carl Gallagher

When his friend from reform school, Nick, kills someone, Carl is traumatized by the event and abandons his thuggish behavior, becoming more like his old self, albeit quietly. Because of this, Carl eventually wins Dominique's affection and begins a relationship with her.

After Dominique's infidelity, he befriended her father and decided to better himself by joining military school. Carl became even more serious upon returning from school, as seen in his cooking for his family and his respectful treatment of his grandfather, Bill Darrgen, while also following his advice. Carl has also expressed a fear of falling into his family's alcoholism and drug addiction, but he also believes that this will eventually take its toll and that low-paying jobs are the best he can hope for, though he has also shown determination to overcome this.

Carl is portrayed as the troublemaker in the first season, after nearly being expelled. In the second season, his passion for drug dealing begins when his grandmother Peggy convinces him to obtain prescription medication to cook methamphetamine. His criminal side is somewhat put on hold in the third season, but he ends up shaving his head after Frank convinces him he has cancer. We see Bonnie, Carl's first love interest, in the fourth season, but their relationship ends when Bonnie disappears with her family to an unknown fate.

Carl's interests include drinking, guns, explosives, and death. Carl appears to be a relatively good child, but he is deeply affected by a completely dysfunctional childhood and family. However, he cares deeply for his family, including his father, Frank, despite Frank's utter failure as a father and role model. In his teens, he distances himself from Frank, though he still loves him and sometimes shows concern for him, even when he is angry with him.

In the fifth season, he uses his nephew, Chuckie, to deliver drugs, but is caught when his half-sister Sammi alerts the police. At the trial, Fiona wants him to cooperate, but instead, he insults the judge and refuses to name his dealer, which lands him a year in juvenile detention. He doesn't care, as he wants the experience to strengthen his reputation. Because of his refusal to snitch, his dealer's gang accepts him.

After being released from juvenile detention in season six, he adopts a bully attitude and thinks he's too popular. His new behavior upsets his family and friends, who ask him to stop, but he ignores them. He also tries to impress his new love interest, Dominique Winslow, though his manners cause her to reject his advances.
