His main goal in the series is to take revenge on the people, places, and things that have harmed him in his everyday life. He also carries a "Dan's Revenge List" (a notebook where he writes down everything he dislikes and would like to get revenge on).

Dan has tousled black hair, green eyes, a scruffy beard, a goatee, and round teeth. His casual attire consists of blue jeans, black ankle boots, and a black T-shirt with the word "JERK" written on it in white. Dan is an extremely short-tempered person who can become enraged at almost anything... well, anything. He has very bad luck with technology and can accidentally cause serious damage. He is very comical and childish. Chris often refers to him as a "big baby." Constant unemployment and poverty lead Dan to be justifiably enraged by things that cause him additional suffering. He can also be very sensitive, in both the negative and positive senses of the word. He can also be very harsh, both negatively and positively, though the latter only occasionally manifests. Despite his reckless actions, Dan has a sense of morality and sometimes does the right thing. Overall, he often displays a false demeanor in the series: he doesn't care about anyone but himself (and a little about Chris), but he hides his true feelings, which he reveals whenever he's around Mr. Mumbles. He is very fond of his car, despite its terrible condition. In fact, many of his attempts at revenge were triggered by someone severely damaging his car, intentionally or not. He is a big fan of Shakespeare; his teddy bear is even named Brutus. He also demonstrates an extensive knowledge of vocabulary, grammar, and the English language in general, demonstrated by his use of unusually erudite terminology and correcting others' utterances.

Although Dan comes across as cold and heartless, he has a sensitive side that rarely shows. His despair quickly escalated to rage, but it was clear that inside he still felt empty. He has great difficulty expressing emotions other than anger and resentment, and even that is part of his emotional range. Dan is a natural leader. Dan is very assertive, which can be both good and bad. Sometimes Dan would see things without reason, as ridiculous as it may sound, "Dan vs. Vicky." Dan developed kind feelings that he failed to develop as a child. From numerous comments and conversations with Chris, it appears that Dan's parents were extremely harsh on him as a child. He said that he spent most of his life in front of the television, as his parents were very inattentive to him, so as a child he was "raised by television." Due to his parents' conscious or unconscious approach to his upbringing, Dan witnessed many unpleasant events in his childhood. Depending on the situation, Dan can be either a protagonist or an antagonist.

Dan is lactose intolerant. After consuming cheese, butter, or dairy products, he rolls on the floor clutching his stomach in pain. Dan mentions that he has been tear-gassed so many times that it no longer affects him. He is also immune to pepper spray. His weight is listed as 105 pounds, which is considered lean by his body mass index (BMI). Dan likely weighs more. Dan appears to be a fan of The Ramones, as he has a poster of the band's logo hanging in his apartment. Dan is apparently ambidextrous, as he can be seen writing or using cutlery with either hand. Dan's favorite cake flavor is chocolate-covered sponge cake. Dan believes in psychics.
