Frank Galleger passed away some time ago.
The neighborhood where the story takes place is dangerous and conflict-ridden; robberies, shootings, etc., are common occurrences.

Carl later became the father of twins because his father used Carl's sperm to impregnate his deranged girlfriend. It is later implied that Carl impregnated another girl, Tish. The youngest is Liam, who was initially believed to be the product of one of Monica's affairs with Frank's godfather, a parole officer, or some random doorman. However, a DNA test later reveals that Liam, who appears African American, is somehow actually Frank's biological son. This is explained by a rumored affair between Frank's grandmother, Rose, and a Black musician. Frank also has an illegitimate daughter, Samantha, his supposed eldest child, who has a son named Chuckie.

The rest of the family consists of Frank's late, abusive father, Mr. Gallagher, and his ex-convict mother, Peggy, who was strangled to death. Frank's three brothers are Jerry, Clayton, and Wyatt. Jerry is Frank's twin and seems estranged from the family. Clayton is heavily implied to be Ian's biological father and lives a life of luxury with his wife, Lucy, and son, Jacob Gallagher. Wyatt had his testicles blown off in the Navy. Frank has a cousin named Patrick who has two sons, Desmond Gallagher and Warren. Patrick later presented a forged will from a deceased family member, Aunt Ginger, declaring himself the owner of the house. He and his family also evicted the main Gallagher family until Debbie told the police that he had abused her, forcing him to agree to Fiona's demands. Frank also has an uncle, George, who supposedly lives in Jersey and appears to be very wealthy. Next is Bill Darrgen, Monica's father, who harbors a deep resentment towards Frank and was never in his grandchildren's lives until his daughter's death.

The Gallaghers are a large family of Irish descent living in the Back of the Yards neighborhood on Chicago's South Side. The family is headed by Frank, a philosophical, alcoholic father who later died from COVID-19. His mother, Monica, left them one day to live with Roberta and died of a brain aneurysm. This left their eldest daughter, Fiona, to care for the house and children. Due to the numerous times he and his siblings had been abandoned by her since he was six, he eventually filed a lawsuit and was appointed their legal guardian, provided he could provide them with income and housing. Frank and Monica's eldest son, Phillip, better known as "Lip," is intelligent and good with women. Lip is the father of Freddie Gallagher. The next oldest is Ian, the third child, who is secretly gay until he comes out to the family, who already knew. Ian works at the local store where he and the married owner are more than friends. They discovered in their teens that he was the product of a union between Monica and one of Frank's brothers, making him a half-brother and cousin to the family. Ian is also bipolar and experiences episodes at times. As a result of a serious crime, Ian was arrested and imprisoned, but was later released on parole. Ian later marries his longtime boyfriend, Mickey Milkovich. After him, the only other girl in the family is young Deborah, who is known for being a kind but very resourceful girl who is always able to turn a situation to her advantage. She became a teenage mother to a daughter named Franny. Next is Carl, who has a penchant for guns, video games, underage drinking, and animal cruelty. Carl soon outgrew his age by becoming a military cadet and marrying a girl named Kassidi, who mysteriously disappears.
