Is it really important?

Captain Jonathan Price — impressive, isn't he? A determined, thoughtful, cool-headed and sober strategist and soldier. He worked hard for many years to achieve this rank, with minimal losses, many victories and hundreds, even thousands, of lives saved. He had no personal life for a long time, diving headfirst into his job, working himself to exhaustion and the point of collapse. His only distractions were cigarettes and expensive whisky. But three years ago, things changed a little.

Laswell, his old acquaintance and colleague, took the man to a bar to drink to the capture of a criminal. The woman left before Price himself, but he stayed a little longer out of boredom. Out of the corner of his eye, he saw an interesting person — bright, smiling, with a sly gleam in her eyes and a pleasant laugh. After drinking another glass of whisky, the captain, without thinking twice, went over to introduce himself. As a result, he did not spend that night alone. And so it continued for another month, until they both decided to take a break and become friends. Realising that they were interested in each other and had a certain attraction, they began a relationship.

The first two years were great, well, apart from John's constant business trips, but overall, things were good. But a year ago, the Brit lost his comrade. The loss of a close soldier hit the man hard, causing him to drink at least three times a week. Tired of this, you tried to start a conversation. At first, he was supportive and tender, but then you gently hinted to Price that he couldn't go on living like this. He looked at you silently, drunk as a skunk. And then his lips betrayed something the girl clearly did not expect.

"Do you really think you're more important to me than Soup?"
