—Rancher (read bio!)

Greeting

—Tom Kaulitz, at your service, my queen.

And since I was never one to back down, I took advantage of the situation. The conversation revolved around land, exports, partnerships… and although I was speaking for my parents, the Ferreyras listened attentively. I held my own well. I knew my figures, my acreage, and my prices, and they liked that. I won over her parents; all I needed was her.

I couldn't get any closer that day. There were too many people and too many formalities. But when I heard they were staying a few days at the new hotel in town, the idea took hold. I offered them a tour of the ranch, and they accepted.

So the next day, I showed up. Her parents were busy, so she came down to the foyer. White dress, sunglasses, coffee in hand. She didn't even look like she was from the same place as me, but as soon as she saw me, she smiled.

—And what are you doing here?

I wonder. —I came to give you the tour I promised. It's just that your parents can't make it, so I thought… I don't know, you could come if you want.

I told her, putting my hands in my pants pockets. She hesitated for a second, but then let out a soft giggle.

—Okay. Show me your ranch, Tom Kaulitz.

And why would I say no… if it was a yes. I put her in my truck, the old but clean one, and we left town. I showed her the stables, the horses, the fields. And when the sun started to go down, I took her to my favorite spot: a lake hidden among the trees. I helped her out. Light walked slowly to the edge, lifting her dress so she wouldn't get it dirty.

-It's lovely.

He said, in that soft voice.

—I told you you were going to like it.

We remained silent for a while, watching the sun's reflection on the water. And in that silence, I found my courage.

—I'm going to have to go to the city next week. Your parents want us to look into the business.

—Oh yeah? Weren't they your parents?

She asked, curious.

—I'm going too. So…well, I'll treat you to a Starbucks, honey. But you order it, because I don't even know what those things you guys drink are called.

The thing I forgot to put at the beginning 😓

I've never liked wearing suits to meetings. But that day I had to wear my linen shirt and my biggest belt buckle, because the mayor had invited the "bigwigs of the ranch" to a meeting at his estate.

According to him, it was to discuss new alliances and land. I went because my bosses were out of town, closing deals in Monterrey, and someone had to represent the Kaulitz family. They say we Kaulitzes are kind of odd for ranchers, even though the last name sounds strange because of a German great-grandfather. We're known throughout the north for having good land and fine cattle. They respect us, you know.

When I arrived at the president's ranch, the cattle ranchers, the mango exporters, the large landowners were already there. All wealthy people, but with calloused hands. And among them all, they arrived.

The Ferreyra family.

Just seeing the black Suburban pull up, kicking up dust, I knew they were from the city. And then she got out. The daughter.

And that's when, man… that's when I really messed up. She was wearing a light blue dress, one of those fancy ones, and her hair fell in waves down to her waist. She had light eyes, beautiful skin, a real angel. I just stood there staring at her like an idiot, hand on my hat and mouth half open, until one of my buddies nudged me with his elbow.

—Hey, Tom, shut your mouth, you pleb, or flies will get in it.

He told me, laughing. But even then I didn't react. And so, without hesitation, I approached the president, feigning interest in the topic of "agrarian societies," just to have an excuse for him to introduce me to them.

—Listen, Mr. President, if the Ferreyras are looking for partners, the Kaulitzes are ready. My bosses were just looking to expand their land to the south.

The old man smiled, delighted.

—That's right, kid! I'll introduce you to them right now.

And sure enough, he took me with them, like I was his fighting rooster. There I was, shaking his daughter's hand. Her hand was soft, warm, with that kind of care you can feel.

-Nice to meet you.
