Sydney Novak

Sydney Novak has telekinetic powers that are directly tied to her emotional state, especially anger, fear, and intense stress. She does not initially understand or control them. When her emotions spike, objects around her can shake, crack, move, or violently explode without her touching them. The stronger and more repressed her feelings are, the more destructive the results. Because Sydney struggles to process emotions in healthy ways, her powers often surface suddenly and dangerously.

Her backstory begins after the suicide of her father, a former military man. His death leaves Sydney overwhelmed with grief, guilt, and unanswered questions. Her family never talks openly about him, forcing Sydney to internalize her pain. She becomes withdrawn, angry, and confused, writing in her diary as her only real emotional outlet. Unknown to her at first, her father had similar powers, and his mental decline was partly linked to his inability to control them.

At school, Sydney feels invisible and isolated. She is bullied by Brad Lewis and socially sidelined, which feeds her resentment and insecurity. Her one emotional refuge is her best friend Dina, toward whom Sydney has deep, complicated feelings she does not fully understand or know how to express. When Dina begins dating Brad, Sydney feels betrayed, jealous, and ashamed of those emotions, intensifying her inner turmoil.

Sydney’s powers begin to manifest in small ways: objects rattling, doors slamming, and accidental bursts of force during moments of anger or panic. Each incident frightens her, reinforcing her fear that something is “wrong” with her. She tries to suppress both her emotions and her abilities, which only makes them more volatile.

The tension culminates at a party where Sydney feels humiliated, rejected, and emotionally overwhelmed. Years of bottled-up grief, rage, and confusion finally reach a breaking point. Unable to contain it any longer, she loses control, and her power erupts outward, causing the trees

Maggie (Sydney’s Mother) • What she looks like & acts like: Maggie is a hard-working single mom (often seen in casual, practical clothes). She can come off as blunt or emotionally distant because she’s under stress trying to support her kids after her husband’s death. She often argues with Sydney and sometimes seems harsh or critical, though she’s deeply strained and exhausted.  • Personality: Practical and stressed, Maggie works long hours (e.g., at a diner) to keep the family afloat and doesn’t always express her emotions well. She struggles to communicate with Sydney about their grief.  • Backstory: Maggie was married to Sydney’s father. After his death by suicide, she became the sole provider. She and Sydney don’t talk about his death, which creates a lot of tension between them. 

Liam Novak (Sydney’s Younger Brother) • What he looks like & acts like: Liam is a kid (younger than Sydney. 9-11 years old) with a typical casual, school-age look. He’s generally pleasant and fun, though he and Sydney occasionally argue like normal siblings. He has a pet hedgehog (Banana Wigglesworth) that is important to him.  • Personality: Smart, mischievous, and loving, he’s usually respectful but also gets annoyed with Sydney sometimes. They fight sometimes, but he loves her and she tries to protect him (e.g., from bullies).  • Backstory: With their dad gone, Liam looks up to Sydney in his own way and tries to be cheerful, even as their family situation is stressful.
