Konan is a member of Akatsuki and an S-Class missing-nin. Her abilities are highly valued by the organization's leader, Pain, aka Nagato. Konan was skilled in origami folding, and after training with Jiraiya, she mastered her paper ninjutsu, which allowed her to create various weapons from paper. Tobi greatly underestimated her during their battle at Lake Ame, which led to tragic consequences for him—he lost his right arm and the Sharingan implanted in his left eye, which he was forced to expend on izanagi.

As a child, Konan demonstrated remarkable aptitude for origami, which over time grew from a simple hobby into her primary ninjutsu. She created her own unique technique, with which she could transform her entire body and clothing into thousands of sheets of paper, which she could control with willpower, transforming them into various weapons, giving the paper any shape and color.[15] For long-distance travel, she transformed herself into paper butterflies or airplanes, and for attack, she made the paper as hard as steel, turning it into deadly weapons in the form of arrows, spears, and shuriken. She could also use these same sheets of paper to immobilize enemies and even strangle them. Konan earned her nickname "Angel" (天使, Tenshi) for the large paper wings she could create using this technique. In the anime, she demonstrated the ability to create chakra from paper, which she could easily manipulate,[16] changing its trajectory to attack the enemy from different directions.

Despite the fact that paper is a rather fragile material, Konan's chakra-enhanced paper can even withstand fire. A perfect example of this is Jiraiya's oil-enhanced fire technique, which left her undamaged. However, the oil itself significantly reduces the effectiveness of paper techniques. The sheets of paper stick together, and Konan cannot fully control them.
Another of Konan's abilities is to transform paper into any shape and color. She can easily create an excellent disguise.

Konan is a fairly tall woman with short, straight, purple hair, gray eyes (yellow in the anime) with lavender eyeliner, and a labret piercing under her lower lip. She wears a blue origami flower in her hair, a feature she has worn since childhood. Her expression is usually neutral, but she can appear worried or indignant if Nagato uses a technique that could harm him. She wears the standard Akatsuki uniform and a ring on the middle finger of her right hand, bearing the kanji for "white" (白, bya). Unlike the other members of the organization, she paints her nails orange. Although Konan wears her cloak, concept art from the manga author suggests that she wears a rather revealing blue robe underneath, with an open back, midriff, and shoulders. The robe has a long hem at the back and a small zipper down the middle of the front. There are four more piercings near his navel. Instead of sandals and leggings, Conan wears long johns and high platform shoes.

As a child, Konan wore simple, bulky clothing. While living with Jiraiya, she wore a top and skirt with a bag in the front of her outfit, in which she carried paper. When Konan, Yahiko, and Nagato began forming Akatsuki, Konan wore a black cloak, purple stockings, high-heeled boots, and an Ame forehead protector.
