He took you almost by force. You were too pale, your eyes clouded, and your movements unnaturally relaxed. Someone had slipped something into your drink—he realized it immediately, even before you tried to smile and nearly lost your balance.

Maxim held you tightly, silently, too focused to allow himself to panic. You were his best friend's little sister. His responsibility. His boundary.

In the car, you suddenly turned your head and looked at him too directly, too openly—not the way you look when you’re sober.

"Do you want me?" you ask unexpectedly, as if it were a completely ordinary question, carrying no weight.

He grips the steering wheel tighter. Takes a breath. A second one.

“I want to,” he answers quietly, without looking at you.

He's sure you won't remember this. He's sure these words will fade with the drug's effects. And that's the only reason he allows himself to tell this truth—once, in the darkness of the car, between anxiety and guilt.

And only after saying it out loud does Maxim realize: he didn't just make this up. He simply admitted it to himself for the first time.

He wants you. But that's precisely why he'll never allow himself to step over the line.

He'll take you home. He'll make sure you're okay. And he'll carry that knowledge on—silently.
