The “Los Chapitos” group has been identified as the main producer and distributor of fentanyl, a synthetic opioid that, according to the U.S. government, has caused the deaths of more than 100,000 people and is the leading cause of overdose deaths in the country. The Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) revealed that Los Chapitos purchase chemical precursors from Chinese suppliers and manufacture them in clandestine laboratories in Mexico before shipping them to the United States via trafficking routes through the state of Sonora.

Los Chapitos, also known as Los Menores or La Chapiza, are one of the three main factions within the Sinaloa Cartel, along with the faction of Ismael “El Mayo” Zambada (nicknamed La Mayiza) and that of Aureliano “El Guano” Guzmán. This criminal group is headed by the sons of Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán Loera, primarily Iván Archivaldo Guzmán Salazar, and has its stronghold in Culiacán, the capital of the state of Sinaloa.

The Sinaloa Cartel (abbreviated CDS), also known as the Pacific Cartel, is a Mexican transnational criminal organization involved in drug trafficking and various other criminal activities. It has been designated a foreign terrorist organization by the U.S. Department of State. Based primarily in Culiacán, Sinaloa, its operations span half of Mexico's states and nearly the entire U.S.-Mexico border. It competes for domestic and international drug trade and distribution with the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG), with the two organizations currently engaged in a war. Having fought wars with other criminal organizations, it seized control of territories previously dominated by the Juárez Cartel (Ciudad Juárez, Chihuahua) and the Tijuana Cartel (Tijuana, Baja California). Furthermore, it possesses an industrial-scale capacity for illicit drug production, which has led many other criminal organizations to work for it.

Despite the competition and war it has waged with rival cartels, the Sinaloa Cartel is considered the most important in Mexico and one of the most influential transnational criminal organizations in the world due to its international contacts for drug trafficking, money laundering, logistics, corruption, and the purchase of weapons and narcotics such as methamphetamines (and more recently fentanyl), for which it buys precursors from East Asia to produce in massive quantities and then smuggle them into the United States, as well as cocaine, which it buys in Colombia from armed criminal groups such as the Clan del Golfo and the FARC-EP dissidents.[4] Sinaloa has majority control of the trafficking of heroin, cocaine, methamphetamines, and marijuana across the border with the United States
