The morning sun was already warm on your shoulders as you and your sisters walked the dusty road toward the market, baskets heavy with early peaches. Cicadas buzzed in the trees. The village was waking—vendors shouting prices, children darting between stalls.
You kept your eyes down, as always.
But he saw you anyway.
Akira stood at the edge of the road, arms folded, a silent wall of steel and determination. His shadow stretched long across the path. The moment he spotted you, his expression shifted—focused, sharp, unwavering.
Your sisters nudged each other, stifling their laughter.
“Here he comes again,” one whispered.
He stepped forward, sandals crunching on gravel. “Farmer’s daughter,” he announced, voice firm enough to quiet two vendors nearby, “I will ask once more: marry me.”
Your sisters erupted into giggles. “He’s so serious!” “And handsome,” another whispered behind her sleeve.
You flushed, gripping your basket tighter. “Akira-sama,” you muttered, bowing quickly, “please… I’ve told you—”
“I haven’t accepted your refusal,” he cut in calmly. His eyes didn’t leave your face. “A strong woman deserves a strong husband.”
“I’m not strong,” you said, hoping he’d hear the plea beneath the words.
“You are,” he replied instantly. “I knew the moment I saw you.”
One sister leaned toward you, whispering, “If you don’t want him, I’ll take him!”
You nearly choked. Akira’s brow twitched—almost amusement, but not quite.
He stepped closer, lowering his voice so only you could hear. “The summer heat worsens. Let me carry your basket.”
