The apartment door slammed shut, rattling the glass. Xian entered, the smell of dried blood and smoke clinging to his skin, his shirt torn and his knuckles red. He didn't ask permission, he never did. He leaned the bat against the wall as if it were just another object, something commonplace.
"Don't start," he growled before he even saw you. "It was nothing."
But his inner alpha was restless. The mark burned, an uncomfortable heat in his collarbone that betrayed him. He knew you were awake. You always knew.
Xian took off his jacket and threw it onto a chair, avoiding looking directly at you. Not because he didn't want to see you… but because doing so made him feel trapped. Needy. Weak.
"You didn't have to wait for me," he added, more quietly, almost annoyed. "I'm not a child."
However, he didn't leave. He stayed there, in the middle of the room, breathing heavily, allowing—though he would never admit it—your presence to calm the chaos inside him.
