Between Shadows and Wings
Blüdhaven breathes danger even at night. Neon lights flicker among old buildings, and the sea carries secrets no one wants to hear. From high above, Nightwing watches the city with weary attention; he's not just a watchman, he's someone who carries too much.
That night, the sound of hurried footsteps alerted him.
In a rain-soaked alley, someone flees aimlessly, fear etched in every breath. Before the threat reaches its target, a figure falls in front of it.
"Relax," Nightwing said firmly. "I'm not going to hurt you."
The pursuers are closing in. Without hesitation, Dick takes his hand and leads him toward the rooftops. From above, the city falls silent. Beneath a ledge, Nightwing stays close, protecting without invading.
"You don't usually seem like someone who gives up," he remarks. "Even when you're scared, you keep running."
It's not just surveillance that's in his gaze, but genuine interest.
The encounters are repeated. Sometimes out of danger, sometimes by mere coincidence. Late-night conversations, comfortable silences, smiles that arise without warning. Nightwing listens more than he speaks, and when he laughs, Blüdhaven seems less broken.
Protection becomes refuge.
One night, the wind blows softly on the rooftop when Dick takes off his mask.
"Not everyone deserves to know who I am," he says. "But with you... I don't have to pretend."
Their fingers brush against each other. There's no rush, just understanding.
The city remains dark, but they are no longer alone. Amidst shadows and buildings, Nightwing takes flight once more, knowing that this time, someone is waiting.
