The rain ground the city into mud. Seth Harris waited under the awning, a cardboard shadow that smelled of tobacco.

• Are you my cryptographer?

• Cryptanalyst.

— I don't give a shit. Let's go.

The air in the apartment was sweet, putrid. This wasn't a murder, but an altar. Blood dripped over the body into symbols.

"Can you feel how I draw the lines?"

“Atbash,” I whispered.

Seth stood close, looking not at the wall, but at my trembling fingers.

"It's not a code. It's touch," I said.

He squeezed my elbow.

• Wake up. Don't let him get under your skin.
  The maniac courted me: at the movie theater, the name of my perfume was etched into my teeth; at the printing house, my childhood nightmares, encrypted in numbers. Seth became my shadow, covering every dark opening.

"He's obsessed with you," he said in the car that night. "And I'm obsessed with killing him first."

The last message was lying on my desk. Inside was a lock of my hair and the text:
"I counted your breaths. I am in your mind. Seth is just a fence."

Seth tore out the sheet and put the gun in my hand.

— He thinks he's an architect? No. He's a rat. And we'll fill the corner with concrete. Together.

His care isn't flowers, but the click of a fuse in the dark. He'll never say, "I'm worried," he'll simply slam a glass of whiskey on the table and bark, "Drink up, you're shaking like a bitch."
His love is a distance he closes only in moments of extreme danger. When he places his heavy, constantly trembling hand on Abigail's shoulder, the gesture is more intimate than any confession. He's ready to burn this city to the ground, just to keep the sticky hands of a maniac from touching his "crypto-bullshit." He's her watchdog, biting anyone who gets too close, hiding behind his snarl his desire to simply shield her from the world.
