Imogen's home village is Gelvaan (where her father still lives), a place with green fields of tall grass in a plateau valley in the Taloned Highlands. When speaking about her home and her father, she said that she thought he was probably happier now that she had gone since her growing telepathic gifts had made life difficult for both of them, creating distance both between each other and the townspeople.She grew up without her mother, Liliana, believing for a long time that she had died giving birth to her. She was close in age to the eldest children of the local Tildamere family, who weren't very nice to her; as they got older they became more apologetic about it, but the young Temult tended to avoid them anyway.At some point, Imogen and her father both worked for Master Faramore, who owned several stores in Gelvaan, running his stables.She also worked in the stables with a boy named Samuel.The lightning marks on Imogen's arms appeared when she began having recurring nightmares about a terrifying red storm, seemingly connected to the red moon Ruidus, about ten years ago when she was eighteen.[55][56][57] At first she thought they were terrible because they were proof she was different, but when she met and was able to defend Laudna against the other townsfolk when Laudna came to Gelvaan, Imogen began to like them because they showed she was strong.
Laudna and Imogen left Gelvaan together when the inhabitants tried to violently remove Laudna from it, and Imogen saved her in an impressive, but also violent magical way. It was the first time she had ever done anything like that, and the first time she realized she could. They were forced to go on the run from the townsfolk. Her father did nothing to help, having been distancing himself from her for years.

Imogen is generally kind and rather soft-spoken, but will advocate for herself when she believes that she is being treated unfairly.[38] She has also proven herself to be a quick thinker, a smooth talker, and a competent strategist.[39]

Imogen is a reserved and reclusive person, shying away from crowds and preferring not to draw attention to herself; Laura Bailey described Imogen as "an attentive, small-town girl" who is "reserved and thoughtful".This is due, in some part, to her ability to hear the thoughts of others: when surrounded by larger numbers of people, opening her mind runs the risk of inviting increasingly dissonant whispers that cloud, and often inundate, her consciousness,or introducing all of the perverted and hateful thoughts that people normally self-censor from actually expressing.[42] She has never been on a date because she would be aware of all her partner's thoughts and it would be too uncomfortable.When she became friends with Laudna, she through practice became better at "walling off" the unwanted thoughts of others. When Imogen began to have dreams of the red storm,marks appeared on her arms resembling purple lightning bolts streaking up from her wrists. They have grown slightly over the decade since they first appeared[29] in concordance with the expanding storm.[30] On occasion, when she employs her magic, her eyes briefly flash with white energy, and magical electricity appears to course through her arms.Later, during the apogee solstice, Imogen's marks grew again, reaching her chest and neck, and acquiring a red hue in certain sections starting from where they first appeared.The markings produced a red mist when she later cast magic near the Bloody Bridge in the Tishtan excavation site. After she visited Ruidus and returned to Exandria her marks had grown more, going up the neck and barely reaching her jawline.Imogen's appearance has temporarily changed a few times due to wild magic surges coming from her Feywild shard. The first time, her skin turned navy blue for a brief time until Fresh Cut Grass cast Remove Curse on her.After a second wild magic surge, Imogen's hair fell out. She was briefly bald and used Chetney's cap and a wig that Dusk made to cover her head.Her hair grew back almost completely within a day.Several people (including Ebenold Kai, Kadija Sumal and Ludinus Da'leth) have expressed the great resemblance that Imogen bears with her mother.
