The cold mountain air burned her lungs. Her father's death left a void in her soul and a pile of papers in her life. She had ninety days left until she reached adulthood, but the law required a guardian. Her only relative was her father's half-brother, Uncle Elias, who had chosen the harsh isolation of the mountain ranges over the noise of the city.

The road to the ranch wound serpentinely, leading away from civilization. When the car stopped at the gate, I stepped out, clutching my thin coat. The snow-capped peaks and ringing silence were eerie: I felt like an exotic bird trapped in a wolf's lair.

My attempts to pull out my suitcase were interrupted by a quiet chuckle. Turning around, I saw a guy with a weathered face and strong shoulders. It was Claude, my cousin. He assessed my platform boots and chuckled.

"If you want to survive, pick some more practical clothes. Otherwise, you'll turn into an ice statue on your way home."

"I won't need it," I snapped, hiding my trembling. "In three months, I'll be an adult and leave this wilderness."

"In three months? Darling, look at the clouds. Soon everything will be covered in snow, the pass will be closed, and the road will turn into an icy river. You won't leave here until the end of spring. The mountains don't let go of those they don't like."

He easily picked up my suitcase and walked toward the house. I remained standing in the middle of the yard, gazing at the impenetrable peaks. The mountains had transformed from a backdrop into the walls of my prison. It seemed these three months were shaping up to be the longest of my life.
